Exports in Africa
Marble granules and powder exports soared to X tons in 2021, rising by 39% against the year before. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a perceptible contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 48%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, marble granules and powder exports rose sharply to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a pronounced curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 24%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
Namibia prevails in exports structure, recording X tons, which was near 81% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by South Africa (X tons), comprising a 9.9% share of total exports. The following exporters - Kenya (X tons), Angola (X tons) and Morocco (X tons) - together made up 6.9% of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to marble granules and powder exports from Namibia stood at -2.1%. At the same time, Angola (+78.3%) and Kenya (+19.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Angola emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +78.3% from 2012-2021. By contrast, South Africa (-5.6%) and Morocco (-12.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Namibia (+5.1 p.p.), Angola (+2.4 p.p.) and Kenya (+2.4 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Morocco and South Africa saw its share reduced by -2.7% and -3% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.
In value terms, Namibia ($X) remains the largest marble granules and powder supplier in Africa, comprising 61% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Angola ($X), with a 16% share of total exports. It was followed by South Africa, with a 9.8% share.
In Namibia, marble granules and powder exports decreased by an average annual rate of -6.0% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Angola (+89.4% per year) and South Africa (-8.2% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, shrinking by -19.3% against the previous year. In general, the export price showed a slight decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the export price increased by 69%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton, and then declined dramatically in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Angola ($X per ton), while Namibia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Kenya (+10.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Africa
In 2021, supplies from abroad of granules, chippings and powder of marble was finally on the rise to reach X tons after five years of decline. In general, imports, however, saw a noticeable reduction. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, marble granules and powder imports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a perceptible downturn. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Tunisia (X tons) represented the key importer of granules, chippings and powder of marble, creating 56% of total imports. Algeria (X tons) held a 13% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Libya (12%) and Morocco (6.2%). The following importers - Cameroon (X tons), South Africa (X tons) and Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) - each reached a 6.1% share of total imports.
Imports into Tunisia decreased at an average annual rate of -2.7% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Morocco (+67.6%), Cote d'Ivoire (+49.3%) and Cameroon (+33.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Morocco emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +67.6% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Libya (-7.0%), South Africa (-10.2%) and Algeria (-11.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Tunisia (+7.2 p.p.), Morocco (+6.1 p.p.), Cameroon (+2.1 p.p.) and Cote d'Ivoire (+1.6 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of South Africa (-1.8 p.p.), Libya (-3.9 p.p.) and Algeria (-14.3 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.
In value terms, Tunisia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported granules, chippings and powder of marble in Africa, comprising 39% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Algeria ($X), with a 14% share of total imports. It was followed by Libya, with an 11% share.
In Tunisia, marble granules and powder imports contracted by an average annual rate of -4.9% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Algeria (-9.7% per year) and Libya (-3.9% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 10% against the previous year. In general, the import price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.
