In 2022, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in the African grape market, when its value decreased by -47.9% to $X. Overall, consumption recorded a noticeable descent. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2021, and then declined notably in the following year.
Grape Production in Africa
In value terms, grape production fell markedly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production continues to indicate a pronounced curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 13%. Over the period under review, production reached the peak level at $X in 2021, and then reduced rapidly in the following year.
South Africa (X tons) constituted the country with the largest volume of grape production, comprising approx. 60% of total volume. Moreover, grape production in South Africa exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Algeria (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Morocco (X tons), with a 12% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume in South Africa was relatively modest. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Algeria (+0.9% per year) and Morocco (+1.8% per year).
The average grape yield shrank to X tons per ha in 2022, waning by -14.2% against 2021 figures. Over the period under review, the yield, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 12% against the previous year. The level of yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2021, and then declined in the following year. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.
The grape harvested area fell significantly to X ha in 2022, with a decrease of -20.5% on the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, the harvested area continues to indicate a noticeable decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the harvested area increased by 5.6% against the previous year. The level of harvested area peaked at X ha in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the harvested area failed to regain momentum.

Exports in Africa
In 2022, grape exports in Africa expanded to X tons, with an increase of 3.9% against the year before. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.8% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when exports increased by 17% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.
In value terms, grape exports rose remarkably to $X in 2022. Total exports indicated a tangible increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +34.8% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 28% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.
Exports by Country
In 2022, South Africa (X tons) represented the major exporter of grapes, comprising 76% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Egypt (X tons), achieving a 19% share of total exports. Namibia (X tons) and Morocco (X tons) took a little share of total exports.
South Africa was also the fastest-growing in terms of the grapes exports, with a CAGR of +4.5% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Morocco (+1.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Egypt (-1.2%) and Namibia (-3.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. South Africa (+12 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Namibia and Egypt saw its share reduced by -2.9% and -9% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest grape supplier in Africa, comprising 69% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Egypt ($X), with a 22% share of total exports. It was followed by Namibia, with a 7.1% share.
In South Africa, grape exports increased at an average annual rate of +5.8% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Egypt (+0.9% per year) and Namibia (+8.1% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, growing by 1.7% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.7%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when the export price increased by 11% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Namibia ($X per ton), while Morocco ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Namibia (+12.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Africa
Grape imports shrank modestly to X tons in 2022, with a decrease of -4.8% compared with the year before. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.3% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 28% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2021, and then fell modestly in the following year.
In value terms, grape imports dropped to $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 18% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X, and then dropped in the following year.
Imports by Country
South Africa represented the largest importing country with an import of about X tons, which resulted at 23% of total imports. Kenya (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 7.2% share, followed by Libya (5.6%) and Egypt (5.2%). Ghana (X tons), Botswana (X tons), Sudan (X tons), Mauritania (X tons), Mauritius (X tons), Senegal (X tons), Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), Nigeria (X tons) and Zambia (X tons) held a little share of total imports.
Imports into South Africa increased at an average annual rate of +8.2% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Mauritania (+20.4%), Nigeria (+18.9%), Zambia (+17.5%), Senegal (+13.9%), Kenya (+11.6%), Ghana (+11.0%), Cote d'Ivoire (+8.1%), Botswana (+6.9%) and Egypt (+2.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mauritania emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +20.4% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Mauritius (-1.1%), Sudan (-7.5%) and Libya (-8.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. South Africa (+9.8 p.p.), Kenya (+4.2 p.p.), Mauritania (+3 p.p.), Nigeria (+2.8 p.p.), Ghana (+2.5 p.p.), Zambia (+2.4 p.p.), Senegal (+2.4 p.p.), Botswana (+1.5 p.p.) and Cote d'Ivoire (+1.5 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Sudan and Libya saw its share reduced by -7.1% and -11.3% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported grapes in Africa, comprising 23% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Egypt ($X), with a 7.9% share of total imports. It was followed by Kenya, with a 7.4% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa totaled +6.1%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Egypt (+8.8% per year) and Kenya (+9.7% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, declining by -2% against the previous year. Overall, the import price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when the import price increased by 8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2018; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.
