In value terms, wool grease exports soared to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports enjoyed a prominent expansion. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

South Africa represented the largest exporting country with an export of around X tons, which accounted for 62% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Egypt (X tons) and Togo (X tons), together achieving a 28% share of total exports. Lesotho (X tons), Tanzania (X tons) and Senegal (X tons) took a relatively small share of total exports.

Exports from South Africa increased at an average annual rate of +15.4% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Egypt (+61.8%), Lesotho (+25.0%) and Senegal (+8.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Egypt emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +61.8% from 2012-2022. Tanzania and Togo experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. Egypt (+22 p.p.), Togo (+4.7 p.p.) and Tanzania (+2.8 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Senegal and South Africa saw its share reduced by -3% and -23.1% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest wool grease supplier in Africa, comprising 60% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Egypt ($X), with a 21% share of total exports. It was followed by Togo, with a 6.7% share.

In South Africa, wool grease exports increased at an average annual rate of +12.5% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Egypt (+59.4% per year) and Togo (0.0% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, with a decrease of -28.3% against the previous year. Overall, the export price saw a noticeable curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 an increase of 64%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2021, and then dropped rapidly in the following year.

Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a perceptible curtailment. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when imports increased by 13% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, wool grease imports contracted to $X in 2022. Overall, imports continue to indicate a perceptible slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 25%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2022, South Africa (X tons), distantly followed by Morocco (X tons), Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), Uganda (X tons), Nigeria (X tons), Senegal (X tons) and Kenya (X tons) were the largest importers of wool grease and fatty substances, together mixing up 73% of total imports. Algeria (X tons), Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons), Egypt (X tons), Togo (X tons) and Tanzania (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to wool grease imports into South Africa stood at -4.5%. At the same time, Togo (+19.1%), Senegal (+4.8%), Uganda (+3.9%), Morocco (+3.0%) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (+2.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Togo emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +19.1% from 2012-2022. Tanzania, Cote d'Ivoire and Algeria experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Egypt (-2.0%), Kenya (-6.1%) and Nigeria (-14.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Morocco (+5.2 p.p.), Uganda (+4.6 p.p.), Senegal (+4.2 p.p.), Cote d'Ivoire (+2.9 p.p.), Togo (+2.1 p.p.) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (+1.6 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Kenya, South Africa and Nigeria saw its share reduced by -1.7%, -2.5% and -19.9% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest wool grease importing markets in Africa were South Africa ($X), Morocco ($X) and Senegal ($X), with a combined 48% share of total imports. Cote d'Ivoire, Algeria, Nigeria, Uganda, Egypt, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Kenya, Togo and Tanzania lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 41%.

In terms of the main importing countries, Togo, with a CAGR of +21.4%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, which is down by -4.7% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 28% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
