The African non-wheat groats market reduced to $X in 2021, declining by -5.2% against the previous year. Overall, consumption recorded a perceptible curtailment. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Non-Wheat Groats Production in Africa

In value terms, non-wheat groats production dropped to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production showed a pronounced shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the production volume increased by 19%. Over the period under review, production attained the peak level at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, production failed to regain momentum.

Exports in Africa

After two years of growth, shipments abroad of groats and meal of cereals (excluding wheat) decreased by -27.4% to X tons in 2021. In general, exports, however, posted a buoyant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 71%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2020, and then fell significantly in the following year.

In value terms, non-wheat groats exports contracted notably to $X in 2021. Total exports indicated a tangible increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.8% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +102.6% against 2018 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 64%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2020, and then shrank notably in the following year.

Exports by Country

South Africa dominates exports structure, finishing at X tons, which was approx. 93% of total exports in 2021. The following exporters - Botswana (X tons) and Tanzania (X tons) - each recorded a 3.3% share of total exports.

Exports from South Africa increased at an average annual rate of +8.1% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Tanzania (+19.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Tanzania emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +19.1% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Botswana (-3.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of South Africa (+3.2 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Botswana (-2.5 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest non-wheat groats supplier in Africa, comprising 92% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Tanzania ($X), with a 1.3% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa amounted to +3.9%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Tanzania (+12.4% per year) and Botswana (-5.1% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 13% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, showed a pronounced setback. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Botswana ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Botswana (-2.2%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in Africa

After two years of growth, supplies from abroad of groats and meal of cereals (excluding wheat) decreased by -9.4% to X tons in 2021. In general, imports, however, recorded a noticeable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 124%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons, and then dropped in the following year.

In value terms, non-wheat groats imports shrank to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 136%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X, and then reduced modestly in the following year.

Imports by Country

Democratic Republic of the Congo represented the main importing country with an import of about X tons, which resulted at 32% of total imports. Zimbabwe (X tons) took a 15% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Cameroon (9.8%), Nigeria (9.7%) and Kenya (6.8%). Angola (X tons), Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), South Africa (X tons), Egypt (X tons) and Gabon (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to non-wheat groats imports into Democratic Republic of the Congo stood at +20.5%. At the same time, Nigeria (+26.1%), Zimbabwe (+20.1%), Cameroon (+9.2%), Gabon (+8.8%) and Cote d'Ivoire (+5.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Nigeria emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +26.1% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Kenya (-4.9%), South Africa (-5.7%), Angola (-7.2%) and Egypt (-16.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Democratic Republic of the Congo (+24 p.p.), Zimbabwe (+12 p.p.), Nigeria (+8.2 p.p.) and Cameroon (+4 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of South Africa (-3.2 p.p.), Angola (-6.6 p.p.), Kenya (-7 p.p.) and Egypt (-12.4 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest non-wheat groats importing markets in Africa were Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X), Nigeria ($X) and Zimbabwe ($X), together accounting for 59% of total imports.

Nigeria, with a CAGR of +28.8%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 8.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, showed a perceptible decline. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Nigeria ($X per ton), while Kenya ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
