Groundnuts Market Size in Africa

In 2022, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in the African groundnuts market, when its value decreased by -13.4% to $X. In general, consumption, however, recorded a slight decline. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of the market remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Groundnuts Production in Africa

In value terms, groundnuts production fell slightly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 25% against the previous year. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2018 to 2022, production growth failed to regain momentum.

The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2022 were Nigeria (X tons), Sudan (X tons) and Senegal (X tons), with a combined 53% share of total production.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Senegal (with a CAGR of +9.6%), while production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the average yield of ground-nut (in-shell) in Africa expanded modestly to X kg per ha, surging by 4.8% compared with the previous year. Over the period under review, the yield, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 5.9% against the previous year. As a result, the yield attained the peak level of X kg per ha. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of the groundnuts yield failed to regain momentum. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, the groundnuts harvested area in Africa dropped modestly to X ha, reducing by -3% on the previous year. The harvested area increased at an average annual rate of +3.4% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when the harvested area increased by 8.5% against the previous year. The level of harvested area peaked at X ha in 2021, and then shrank modestly in the following year.

Exports in Africa

In 2022, shipments abroad of ground-nut (in-shell) was finally on the rise to reach X tons after two years of decline. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a noticeable decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 434% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, groundnuts exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 411% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Egypt dominates exports structure, recording X tons, which was near 72% of total exports in 2022. Togo (X tons) took an 8.4% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Sudan (6.4%). The following exporters - Mozambique (X tons), Senegal (X tons) and Madagascar (X tons) - together made up 6.5% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to groundnuts exports from Egypt stood at +1.5%. At the same time, Togo (+13.4%), Mozambique (+11.3%), Sudan (+9.8%) and Madagascar (+4.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Togo emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +13.4% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Senegal (-23.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Egypt (+25 p.p.), Togo (+6.6 p.p.), Sudan (+4.5 p.p.) and Mozambique (+2.3 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Senegal (-18.5 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Egypt ($X) emerged as the largest groundnuts supplier in Africa, comprising 74% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Togo ($X), with a 12% share of total exports. It was followed by Sudan, with a 3.7% share.

In Egypt, groundnuts exports remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Togo (+15.8% per year) and Sudan (+4.9% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, growing by 13% against the previous year. Overall, the export price enjoyed a perceptible increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 80% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Togo ($X per ton), while Madagascar ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Senegal (+4.4%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in Africa

For the fourth consecutive year, Africa recorded decline in purchases abroad of ground-nut (in-shell), which decreased by -1.6% to X tons in 2022. In general, imports recorded a abrupt descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 36%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, groundnuts imports expanded markedly to $X in 2022. Overall, imports saw a deep slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 34%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Togo (X tons), distantly followed by South Africa (X tons), Egypt (X tons), Lesotho (X tons), Nigeria (X tons) and Djibouti (X tons) represented the main importers of ground-nut (in-shell), together comprising 68% of total imports. Benin (X tons), Mauritius (X tons), Malawi (X tons), Zambia (X tons), Niger (X tons), Mali (X tons) and Algeria (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to groundnuts imports into Togo stood at +69.9%. At the same time, Malawi (+99.2%), Benin (+61.3%), Zambia (+58.0%), Lesotho (+50.8%), Nigeria (+46.5%), Niger (+23.7%), Djibouti (+9.2%) and Mali (+2.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Malawi emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +99.2% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Mauritius (-2.6%), Egypt (-8.4%), South Africa (-15.5%) and Algeria (-26.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Togo, Lesotho, Nigeria, Djibouti, Benin, Malawi, Egypt, Zambia, Mauritius, Niger and Mali increased by +26, +7.6, +7.2, +4.8, +4.3, +3.8, +3, +3, +2.5, +2.1 and +1.5 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, Egypt ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported ground-nut (in-shell) in Africa, comprising 22% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Mauritius ($X), with an 11% share of total imports. It was followed by South Africa, with a 10% share.

In Egypt, groundnuts imports shrank by an average annual rate of -10.8% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Mauritius (+0.5% per year) and South Africa (-21.2% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 10% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, saw a noticeable descent. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 an increase of 33% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Mauritius ($X per ton), while Benin ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mauritius (+3.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
