The African gummed paper market fell modestly to $X in 2021, waning by -3.2% against the previous year. In general, consumption recorded a perceptible contraction. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the market remained at a lower figure.

In 2021, overseas shipments of gummed paper and paperboard (excluding self-adhesives) were finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Overall, exports, however, recorded a deep reduction. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, gummed paper exports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a deep reduction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when exports increased by 56% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

In 2021, Egypt (X tons) represented the major exporter of gummed paper and paperboard (excluding self-adhesives), constituting 46% of total exports. It was distantly followed by South Africa (X tons), Tunisia (X tons), Kenya (X tons) and Mauritius (X tons), together creating a 51% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to gummed paper exports from Egypt stood at +6.3%. At the same time, Mauritius (+34.4%) and Tunisia (+13.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mauritius emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +34.4% from 2012-2021. By contrast, South Africa (-16.7%) and Kenya (-26.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Egypt, Tunisia and Mauritius increased by +37, +12 and +5.3 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, Egypt ($X), South Africa ($X) and Mauritius ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, together accounting for 81% of total exports.

In terms of the main exporting countries, Mauritius, with a CAGR of +45.0%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, shrinking by -33.6% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when the export price increased by 69% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton, and then reduced markedly in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Mauritius ($X per ton), while Kenya ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+8.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, overseas purchases of gummed paper and paperboard (excluding self-adhesives) increased by 32% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a mild curtailment. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, gummed paper imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2021, South Africa (X tons), distantly followed by Algeria (X tons), Egypt (X tons), Gabon (X tons), Ethiopia (X tons) and Tanzania (X tons) were the key importers of gummed paper and paperboard (excluding self-adhesives), together creating 68% of total imports. Kenya (X tons), Tunisia (X tons), Nigeria (X tons), Morocco (X tons), Angola (X tons) and Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Gabon (with a CAGR of +66.0%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest gummed paper importing markets in Africa were South Africa ($X), Egypt ($X) and Ethiopia ($X), together accounting for 47% of total imports. Algeria, Gabon, Tanzania, Tunisia, Kenya, Morocco, Nigeria, Angola and Cote d'Ivoire lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 41%.

Among the main importing countries, Gabon, with a CAGR of +45.6%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, increasing by 11% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.1%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 an increase of 12% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Ethiopia ($X per ton), while Angola ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
