The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 54%. The volume of export peaked in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

In value terms, gypsum and anhydrite exports expanded significantly to $X in 2021. Overall, exports recorded buoyant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when exports increased by 33%. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

Exports by Country

Morocco was the main exporter of gypsum and anhydrite in Africa, with the volume of exports amounting to X tons, which was near 49% of total exports in 2021. Egypt (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with an 18% share, followed by Kenya (15%) and Tunisia (7.3%). The following exporters - Tanzania (X tons), South Africa (X tons) and Benin (X tons) - together made up 6.9% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to gypsum and anhydrite exports from Morocco stood at +22.1%. At the same time, Tunisia (+37.3%), Tanzania (+27.4%), Egypt (+25.9%), Kenya (+19.0%) and South Africa (+4.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Tunisia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +37.3% from 2012-2021. Benin experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Morocco, Egypt, Tunisia, Kenya, Benin and Tanzania increased by +19, +9.7, +5.7, +3.3, +2 and +1.6 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, the largest gypsum and anhydrite supplying countries in Africa were Morocco ($X), Egypt ($X) and Kenya ($X), with a combined 82% share of total exports. Tanzania, Tunisia, South Africa and Benin lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 13%.

Tanzania, with a CAGR of +36.7%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 7.1% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, saw a perceptible contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when the export price increased by 15% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Tanzania ($X per ton), while Tunisia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Tanzania (+7.2%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in Africa

In 2021, the amount of gypsum and anhydrite imported in Africa rose markedly to X tons, surging by 6% against 2020. Overall, imports continue to indicate prominent growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 22%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

In value terms, gypsum and anhydrite imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, imports saw prominent growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when imports increased by 40% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in years to come.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Nigeria (X tons), distantly followed by South Africa (X tons), Senegal (X tons), Ghana (X tons), Benin (X tons), Togo (X tons), Kenya (X tons), Burkina Faso (X tons), Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) and Uganda (X tons) were the major importers of gypsum and anhydrite, together committing 87% of total imports. Guinea (X tons) held a relatively small share of total imports.

Imports into Nigeria increased at an average annual rate of +7.9% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, South Africa (+40.9%), Burkina Faso (+25.5%), Senegal (+20.6%), Uganda (+15.7%), Guinea (+14.4%), Kenya (+13.8%), Togo (+8.8%), Benin (+7.9%) and Cote d'Ivoire (+3.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, South Africa emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +40.9% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Ghana (-2.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of South Africa, Senegal, Burkina Faso, Uganda and Kenya increased by +9.1, +5.3, +4.2, +2.2 and +2.1 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Nigeria ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported gypsum and anhydrite in Africa, comprising 55% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Ghana ($X), with a 5.4% share of total imports. It was followed by Benin, with a 4.7% share.

In Nigeria, gypsum and anhydrite imports expanded at an average annual rate of +14.7% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Ghana (-1.3% per year) and Benin (+6.7% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 26% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Nigeria ($X per ton), while Guinea ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
