After two years of growth, the African hair lotion and preparation market decreased by -1.8% to $X in 2021. In general, consumption saw a relatively flat trend pattern. In value terms, hair lotion and preparation exports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a pronounced decline. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

South Africa dominates exports structure, finishing at X tons, which was approx. 56% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Uganda (X tons), Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) and Kenya (X tons), together comprising a 25% share of total exports. Nigeria (X tons), Tunisia (X tons) and Morocco (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Exports from South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of -3.4% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Uganda (+27.5%), Morocco (+10.8%) and Tunisia (+6.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Uganda emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +27.5% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Kenya (-1.3%), Nigeria (-6.8%) and Cote d'Ivoire (-10.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Uganda, Tunisia and Morocco increased by +9.1, +2.2 and +1.8 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest hair lotion and preparation supplier in Africa, comprising 64% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Uganda ($X), with a 7.1% share of total exports. It was followed by Cote d'Ivoire, with a 6.6% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa amounted to -3.1%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Uganda (+37.8% per year) and Cote d'Ivoire (-10.8% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 11% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 an increase of 12%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Tunisia ($X per ton), while Nigeria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Uganda (+8.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the amount of hair lotion and preparation imported in Africa expanded sharply to X tons, surging by 14% against the previous year's figure. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, the largest hair lotion and preparation importing markets in Africa were South Africa ($X), Morocco ($X) and Libya ($X), with a combined 36% share of total imports. Algeria, Egypt, Tunisia, Kenya, Mauritius, Sudan, Ghana, Tanzania, Djibouti and Nigeria lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 41%.

In terms of the main importing countries, Djibouti, with a CAGR of +20.8%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, increasing by 9.7% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Tunisia ($X per ton), while Nigeria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
