Hairpin Market Size in Africa

In 2021, the African hairpin market was finally on the rise to reach $X after four years of decline. Overall, consumption, however, showed a pronounced shrinkage. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Hairpin Production in Africa

In value terms, hairpin production expanded modestly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Overall, production faced a precipitous shrinkage. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 44% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, production failed to regain momentum.

Hairpin Exports

Exports in Africa

For the third consecutive year, Africa recorded decline in shipments abroad of hairpins, curling pins, curling grips and hair-curlers, which decreased by -0.3% to X tons in 2021. Over the period under review, exports recorded a deep downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when exports increased by 17% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, hairpin exports fell modestly to $X in 2021. In general, exports faced a deep slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when exports increased by 8.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

In 2021, South Africa (X tons) represented the largest exporter of hairpins, curling pins, curling grips and hair-curlers, creating 58% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Tunisia (X tons), Ghana (X tons), Rwanda (X tons) and Nigeria (X tons), together generating a 32% share of total exports. The following exporters - Tanzania (X tons) and Zambia (X tons) - each amounted to a 5.6% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to hairpin exports from South Africa stood at -5.5%. At the same time, Rwanda (+219.5%), Zambia (+50.6%), Nigeria (+22.1%) and Ghana (+20.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Rwanda emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +219.5% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Tanzania (-1.0%) and Tunisia (-23.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of South Africa (+16 p.p.), Ghana (+9.4 p.p.), Rwanda (+5.3 p.p.), Nigeria (+4.6 p.p.) and Zambia (+2.7 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Tunisia (-40.1 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X), Tunisia ($X) and Ghana ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, together accounting for 86% of total exports. These countries were followed by Nigeria, Tanzania, Zambia and Rwanda, which together accounted for a further 4.3%.

Rwanda, with a CAGR of +168.0%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, with a decrease of -3% against the previous year. Overall, the export price continues to indicate a deep downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when the export price decreased by -1.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Tunisia ($X per ton), while Rwanda ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Ghana (+2.2%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Hairpin Imports

Imports in Africa

In 2021, purchases abroad of hairpins, curling pins, curling grips and hair-curlers was finally on the rise to reach X tons after four years of decline. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a abrupt slump. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, hairpin imports surged to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, recorded a perceptible descent. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, South Africa (X tons), distantly followed by Morocco (X tons), Tanzania (X tons), Ethiopia (X tons), Tunisia (X tons) and Uganda (X tons) were the largest importers of hairpins, curling pins, curling grips and hair-curlers, together achieving 64% of total imports. Madagascar (X tons), Mozambique (X tons), Ghana (X tons), Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), Senegal (X tons), Sudan (X tons) and Mauritius (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Imports into South Africa increased at an average annual rate of +3.5% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Mozambique (+13.2%), Tanzania (+12.6%), Uganda (+8.0%), Madagascar (+6.4%), Ghana (+4.8%) and Cote d'Ivoire (+3.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mozambique emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +13.2% from 2012-2021. Senegal and Morocco experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Sudan (-1.4%), Tunisia (-2.4%), Ethiopia (-2.4%) and Mauritius (-5.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. South Africa (+13 p.p.), Tanzania (+7.4 p.p.), Uganda (+3.7 p.p.), Morocco (+3.3 p.p.), Mozambique (+3.1 p.p.), Madagascar (+2.8 p.p.), Ghana (+2.2 p.p.) and Ethiopia (+1.9 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported hairpins, curling pins, curling grips and hair-curlers in Africa, comprising 29% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Morocco ($X), with a 14% share of total imports. It was followed by Mozambique, with a 7.7% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa totaled -1.6%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Morocco (+6.2% per year) and Mozambique (+24.1% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, rising by 11% against the previous year. Over the last nine years, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.5%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 an increase of 13%. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in years to come.
