In 2022, the African halogenated hydrocarbon derivative market decreased by -3.5% to $X for the first time since 2015, thus ending a six-year rising trend. Overall, consumption, however, enjoyed a resilient expansion. Over the period under review, the market reached the peak level at $X in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.

In value terms, halogenated hydrocarbon derivative production reached $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production enjoyed buoyant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when the production volume increased by 60% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2020; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.

Exports in Africa

In 2022, overseas shipments of halogenated derivatives of hydrocarbons increased by 31% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when exports increased by 57%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, halogenated hydrocarbon derivative exports expanded markedly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a noticeable decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 60%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

In 2022, South Africa (X tons) was the major exporter of halogenated derivatives of hydrocarbons, generating 59% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Egypt (X tons), mixing up a 27% share of total exports. The following exporters - Tunisia (X tons), Kenya (X tons), Rwanda (X tons) and Morocco (X tons) - together made up 10% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to halogenated hydrocarbon derivative exports from South Africa stood at +1.2%. At the same time, Rwanda (+48.4%) and Tunisia (+3.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Rwanda emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +48.4% from 2012-2022. Kenya experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Egypt (-2.8%) and Morocco (-3.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of South Africa (+10 p.p.) and Rwanda (+2.1 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Egypt (-6.5 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest halogenated hydrocarbon derivative supplier in Africa, comprising 74% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Egypt ($X), with a 13% share of total exports. It was followed by Tunisia, with a 4.9% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Africa stood at +4.5%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Egypt (-15.9% per year) and Tunisia (+2.7% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, with a decrease of -14.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price recorded a perceptible curtailment. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when the export price increased by 16% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Tunisia ($X per ton), while Rwanda ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Rwanda (+14.2%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in Africa

In 2022, supplies from abroad of halogenated derivatives of hydrocarbons decreased by -39% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after three years of growth. Over the period under review, imports, however, enjoyed resilient growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 64% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, halogenated hydrocarbon derivative imports fell to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a notable expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +21.8% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 42% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X, and then fell in the following year.

Imports by Country

Egypt dominates imports structure, reaching X tons, which was approx. 68% of total imports in 2022. Nigeria (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 7.2% share, followed by South Africa (6.8%). Morocco (X tons) and Algeria (X tons) held a little share of total imports.

Egypt was also the fastest-growing in terms of the halogenated derivatives of hydrocarbons imports, with a CAGR of +12.9% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Morocco (+8.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. South Africa and Nigeria experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Algeria (-1.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Egypt (+26 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Algeria, South Africa and Nigeria saw its share reduced by -3.3%, -6.8% and -8.2% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Egypt ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported halogenated derivatives of hydrocarbons in Africa, comprising 48% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by South Africa ($X), with a 16% share of total imports. It was followed by Nigeria, with a 9.3% share.

In Egypt, halogenated hydrocarbon derivative imports expanded at an average annual rate of +8.4% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: South Africa (-0.1% per year) and Nigeria (+2.6% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, growing by 41% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, recorded a noticeable decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the import price increased by 44% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Egypt ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
