In 2021, the African hand-held blow pipe market decreased by -22% to $X, falling for the second year in a row after five years of growth. Over the period under review, consumption, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2020 to 2021, the growth of the market remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2021, shipments abroad of hand-held blow pipes for soldering, brazing or welding increased by 10% to X units, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. In general, exports enjoyed a prominent expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 169%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X units. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, hand-held blow pipe exports amounted to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, saw a deep downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when exports increased by 77%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

South Africa prevails in exports structure, recording X units, which was approx. 78% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Tanzania (X units), making up a 4.7% share of total exports. Democratic Republic of the Congo (X units) and Ghana (X units) held a relatively small share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to hand-held blow pipe exports from South Africa stood at +19.9%. At the same time, Democratic Republic of the Congo (+40.0%) and Tanzania (+1.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Democratic Republic of the Congo emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +40.0% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Ghana (-1.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. South Africa (+51 p.p.) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (+3.8 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Tanzania and Ghana saw its share reduced by -2.4% and -2.4% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest hand-held blow pipe supplier in Africa, comprising 82% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X), with a 3% share of total exports. It was followed by Tanzania, with a 2.9% share.

In South Africa, hand-held blow pipe exports shrank by an average annual rate of -7.9% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Democratic Republic of the Congo (+33.3% per year) and Tanzania (+9.8% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per unit, standing approx. at the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, faced a deep reduction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 an increase of 71% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per unit in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per unit), while Ghana ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Tanzania (+8.2%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in Africa

In 2021, purchases abroad of hand-held blow pipes for soldering, brazing or welding decreased by -35.4% to X units, falling for the second consecutive year after eight years of growth. Overall, imports, however, recorded resilient growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when imports increased by 91% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X units in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, hand-held blow pipe imports reduced remarkably to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, showed a remarkable increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 125%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Nigeria prevails in imports structure, resulting at X units, which was near 56% of total imports in 2021. Morocco (X units) took a 9.3% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by South Africa (6.3%). Algeria (X units), Libya (X units), Botswana (X units), Cote d'Ivoire (X units) and Angola (X units) took a relatively small share of total imports.

Nigeria was also the fastest-growing in terms of the hand-held blow pipes for soldering, brazing or welding imports, with a CAGR of +63.3% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, South Africa (+25.8%), Libya (+25.7%), Botswana (+25.4%), Angola (+7.6%), Cote d'Ivoire (+5.9%), Morocco (+5.4%) and Algeria (+3.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Nigeria (+54 p.p.), South Africa (+3.5 p.p.), Libya (+2.1 p.p.) and Botswana (+1.7 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Angola, Cote d'Ivoire, Algeria and Morocco saw its share reduced by -1.9%, -2.6%, -6.7% and -11.1% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, Nigeria ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported hand-held blow pipes for soldering, brazing or welding in Africa, comprising 66% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by South Africa ($X), with a 6.1% share of total imports. It was followed by Morocco, with a 6% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Nigeria amounted to +63.1%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: South Africa (+13.9% per year) and Morocco (+4.1% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per unit, reducing by -44.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, enjoyed a temperate increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 67%. The level of import peaked at $X per unit in 2020, and then declined dramatically in the following year.
