The total consumption indicated a temperate expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.4% over the last decade. Hand sieve exports surged to X units in 2022, growing by 33% against the year before. In general, exports saw perceptible growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 208%. The volume of export peaked at X units in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, hand sieve exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 63% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

South Africa represented the key exporting country with an export of about X units, which resulted at 67% of total exports. Morocco (X units) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 13% share, followed by Algeria (7%) and Egypt (5.8%). Rwanda (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Exports from South Africa increased at an average annual rate of +4.6% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Morocco (+19.6%) and Algeria (+15.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Morocco emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +19.6% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Egypt (-1.9%) and Rwanda (-4.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of South Africa (+12 p.p.), Morocco (+9.9 p.p.), Egypt (+5.8 p.p.), Algeria (+4.9 p.p.) and Rwanda (+1.6 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest hand sieve supplier in Africa, comprising 80% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Egypt ($X), with a 7% share of total exports. It was followed by Morocco, with a 2.9% share.

In South Africa, hand sieve exports increased at an average annual rate of +1.0% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Egypt (-6.1% per year) and Morocco (+4.3% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per unit, stabilizing at the previous year. In general, the export price, however, showed a noticeable reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the export price increased by 94%. The level of export peaked at $X per unit in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per unit), while Algeria ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (-3.4%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

In 2022, the amount of hand sieves and hand riddles imported in Africa skyrocketed to X units, picking up by 68% on the previous year. In general, imports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, hand sieve imports soared to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated moderate growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +27.2% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when imports increased by 47%. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

Imports by Country

South Africa was the key importing country with an import of around X units, which recorded 30% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Egypt (X units), Botswana (X units) and Niger (X units), together committing a 29% share of total imports. The following importers - Algeria (X units), Tanzania (X units), Nigeria (X units), Cameroon (X units), Rwanda (X units), Madagascar (X units), Angola (X units), Cote d'Ivoire (X units) and Morocco (X units) - together made up 27% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to hand sieve imports into South Africa stood at +23.7%. At the same time, Botswana (+36.8%), Cameroon (+20.2%), Egypt (+17.1%), Cote d'Ivoire (+16.7%), Nigeria (+10.9%), Rwanda (+9.7%) and Niger (+4.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Botswana emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +36.8% from 2012-2022. Morocco experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Algeria (-6.9%), Madagascar (-8.0%), Angola (-10.3%) and Tanzania (-18.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. South Africa (+27 p.p.), Egypt (+11 p.p.), Botswana (+8.5 p.p.), Cameroon (+2.8 p.p.), Nigeria (+2.2 p.p.), Niger (+2.1 p.p.), Cote d'Ivoire (+1.7 p.p.) and Rwanda (+1.6 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Madagascar, Algeria, Angola and Tanzania saw its share reduced by -3.8%, -4.8%, -5.2% and -26.2% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X), Egypt ($X) and Cote d'Ivoire ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 47% share of total imports. Botswana, Morocco, Angola, Algeria, Nigeria, Cameroon, Rwanda, Niger, Tanzania and Madagascar lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 32%.

Botswana, with a CAGR of +25.9%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per unit, with a decrease of -14.7% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.1%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 30% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum at $X per unit in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Cote d'Ivoire ($X per unit), while Niger ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Angola (+14.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
