The African hand tools market rose markedly to $X in 2021, surging by 9.8% against the previous year. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +1.3% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

In value terms, hand tools production surged to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production saw a buoyant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 85%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, production remained at a lower figure.

Exports in Africa
After two years of decline, shipments abroad of hand tools increased by 1.6% to X tons in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a perceptible curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 38%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, hand tools exports expanded rapidly to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, saw a pronounced shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 20% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
South Africa dominates exports structure, accounting for X tons, which was near 67% of total exports in 2021. Rwanda (X tons) held a 7.5% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Ghana (6.4%). Tanzania (X tons), Uganda (X tons), Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) and Kenya (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Exports from South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of -2.7% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Rwanda (+49.5%), Tanzania (+4.2%) and Ghana (+3.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Rwanda emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +49.5% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Uganda (-3.3%), Cote d'Ivoire (-10.2%) and Kenya (-13.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Rwanda (+7.3 p.p.), Ghana (+3 p.p.) and South Africa (+3 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Cote d'Ivoire and Kenya saw its share reduced by -2.5% and -3.2% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest hand tools supplier in Africa, comprising 74% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Ghana ($X), with a 4.6% share of total exports. It was followed by Cote d'Ivoire, with a 1.1% share.
In South Africa, hand tools exports decreased by an average annual rate of -4.2% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Ghana (+10.5% per year) and Cote d'Ivoire (-11.5% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 8.9% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, continues to indicate a mild descent. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when the export price increased by 21%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Tanzania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Ghana (+6.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Africa
In 2021, overseas purchases of hand tools decreased by -6.8% to X tons for the first time since 2016, thus ending a four-year rising trend. In general, imports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 18% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, hand tools imports rose markedly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 14%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
The countries with the highest levels of hand tools imports in 2021 were South Africa (X tons), Ghana (X tons), Tanzania (X tons), Kenya (X tons), Nigeria (X tons), Algeria (X tons), Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), Mozambique (X tons), Egypt (X tons), Morocco (X tons), Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons) and Senegal (X tons), together recording 67% of total import. Angola (X tons) held a relatively small share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Cote d'Ivoire (with a CAGR of +16.1%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest hand tools importing markets in Africa were South Africa ($X), Algeria ($X) and Tanzania ($X), with a combined 27% share of total imports. Ghana, Kenya, Morocco, Egypt, Cote d'Ivoire, Senegal, Mozambique, Angola, Democratic Republic of the Congo and Nigeria lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 37%.
Senegal, with a CAGR of +12.9%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, jumping by 22% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Morocco ($X per ton), while Nigeria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Egypt (+6.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
