Handmade Paper Market Size in Africa

The African handmade paper market reduced to $X in 2021, dropping by -5% against the previous year. The total consumption indicated a temperate increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.7% over the last nine years. The total production indicated a moderate expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.8% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production increased by +54.1% against 2016 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 37%. Over the period under review, production reached the maximum level at $X in 2020, and then declined in the following year.

In 2021, exports of handmade paper and paperboard in Africa surged to X tons, jumping by 38% compared with the previous year's figure. In general, exports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, handmade paper exports surged to $X in 2021. Total exports indicated a moderate expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.3% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

South Africa was the main exporting country with an export of around X tons, which resulted at 76% of total exports. Egypt (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 12% share, followed by Tunisia (9.7%).

Exports from South Africa increased at an average annual rate of +5.1% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Tunisia (+64.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Tunisia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +64.5% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Egypt (-15.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of South Africa and Tunisia increased by +30 and +9.6 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest handmade paper supplier in Africa, comprising 65% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Tunisia ($X), with a 20% share of total exports.

In South Africa, handmade paper exports expanded at an average annual rate of +4.6% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Tunisia (+51.3% per year) and Egypt (-8.5% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, surging by 22% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.9%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Tunisia ($X per ton), while South Africa ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Egypt (+7.8%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

After five years of decline, supplies from abroad of handmade paper and paperboard increased by 107% to X tons in 2021. In general, imports continue to indicate a temperate increase. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, handmade paper imports soared to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a slight expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Burkina Faso was the key importing country with an import of about X tons, which amounted to 33% of total imports. Algeria (X tons) took a 12% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Tunisia (8.2%), Nigeria (5.9%) and Egypt (5.7%). South Africa (X tons), Angola (X tons), Morocco (X tons), Swaziland (X tons), Sierra Leone (X tons), Mayotte (X tons), Kenya (X tons) and Namibia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Burkina Faso was also the fastest-growing in terms of the handmade paper and paperboard imports, with a CAGR of +45.3% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Mayotte (+34.2%), Sierra Leone (+32.6%), Tunisia (+23.5%), Swaziland (+16.6%), Namibia (+11.3%), Kenya (+8.7%), Nigeria (+7.0%), South Africa (+6.1%), Morocco (+4.1%) and Angola (+3.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Algeria (-4.4%) and Egypt (-4.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Burkina Faso, Tunisia, Sierra Leone, Mayotte and Swaziland increased by +31, +6.5, +2.1, +2.1 and +1.7 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Nigeria ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported handmade paper and paperboard in Africa, comprising 22% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Tunisia ($X), with a 10% share of total imports. It was followed by Burkina Faso, with a 6.7% share.

In Nigeria, handmade paper imports increased at an average annual rate of +22.1% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Tunisia (+24.1% per year) and Burkina Faso (+41.1% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, with a decrease of -7.1% against the previous year. Overall, the import price continues to indicate a noticeable shrinkage. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 20% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Nigeria ($X per ton), while Burkina Faso ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
