Hazelnut Market Size in Africa

The African hazelnut market surged to $X in 2021, rising by 26% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption, however, continues to indicate a noticeable contraction. Over the period under review, the market reached the maximum level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, hazelnut production declined to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Overall, production posted prominent growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when the production volume increased by 110%. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2016 to 2021, production growth failed to regain momentum.

The country with the largest volume of hazelnut production was Cameroon (X tons), accounting for 63% of total volume. Moreover, hazelnut production in Cameroon exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Tunisia (X tons), fourfold. Uganda (X tons) ranked third in terms of total production with a 6.9% share.

In Cameroon, hazelnut production remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: Tunisia (+0.8% per year) and Uganda (+2.4% per year).

In 2021, the average yield of hazelnuts in Africa was estimated at X tons per ha, picking up by 5.7% compared with the year before. Over the period under review, the yield recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when the yield increased by 118% against the previous year. As a result, the yield attained the peak level of X tons per ha. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of the hazelnut yield remained at a somewhat lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2021, the hazelnut harvested area in Africa was estimated at X ha, remaining relatively unchanged against the previous year's figure. The harvested area increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 13% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to hazelnut production attained the maximum at X ha in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the harvested area stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in Africa

In 2021, overseas shipments of hazelnuts decreased by -62.1% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after three years of growth. Overall, exports, however, showed significant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when exports increased by 1,188%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, hazelnut exports plummeted to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, posted a buoyant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 1,062%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Niger was the major exporter of hazelnuts in Africa, with the volume of exports reaching X tons, which was approx. 63% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Ghana (X tons) and South Africa (X tons), together making up a 32% share of total exports. Namibia (X kg) took a little share of total exports.

Exports from Niger increased at an average annual rate of +50.1% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Ghana (+314.3%), Namibia (+4.8%) and South Africa (+3.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Ghana emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +314.3% from 2012-2021. Niger (+52 p.p.) and Ghana (+23 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Namibia and South Africa saw its share reduced by -7% and -38.1% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, Ghana ($X) emerged as the largest hazelnut supplier in Africa, comprising 55% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by South Africa ($X), with a 22% share of total exports. It was followed by Niger, with a 12% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Ghana amounted to +740.1%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: South Africa (+0.8% per year) and Niger (+29.2% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, waning by -47.1% against the previous year. Overall, the export price showed a abrupt descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 an increase of 517% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Ghana ($X per ton), while Niger ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Ghana (+102.7%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

In 2021, approx. X tons of hazelnuts were imported in Africa; jumping by 40% on the previous year's figure. In general, imports, however, saw a noticeable downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when imports increased by 67% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, hazelnut imports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a abrupt decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 67% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Algeria represented the largest importer of hazelnuts in Africa, with the volume of imports recording X tons, which was approx. 61% of total imports in 2021. Egypt (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 27% share, followed by Tunisia (8.6%).

Algeria was also the fastest-growing in terms of the hazelnuts imports, with a CAGR of +14.5% from 2012 to 2021. Tunisia (-6.0%) and Egypt (-14.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Algeria increased by +49 percentage points.

In value terms, Algeria ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported hazelnuts in Africa, comprising 60% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Egypt ($X), with a 29% share of total imports.

In Algeria, hazelnut imports expanded at an average annual rate of +14.6% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Egypt (-15.7% per year) and Tunisia (-10.2% per year).

The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, which is down by -2.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price showed a slight curtailment. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when the import price increased by 11%. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
