Exports in Africa

In 2022, the amount of headgear of rubber or plastic exported in Africa surged to X units, with an increase of 29% compared with the previous year's figure. Overall, exports, however, saw a pronounced decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 46% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X units in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, plastic headgear exports surged to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a perceptible decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when exports increased by 60% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

In 2022, South Africa (X units) was the largest exporter of headgear of rubber or plastic, constituting 65% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Mauritius (X units), comprising a 14% share of total exports. The following exporters - Zimbabwe (X units), Rwanda (X units), Tunisia (X units), Morocco (X units) and Nigeria (X units) - together made up 15% of total exports.

Exports from South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of -7.2% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Rwanda (+100.8%), Mauritius (+40.0%), Zimbabwe (+26.2%), Morocco (+4.4%) and Tunisia (+4.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Rwanda emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +100.8% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Nigeria (-7.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Mauritius (+13 p.p.), Zimbabwe (+3.7 p.p.), Rwanda (+3.3 p.p.), Morocco (+1.7 p.p.) and Tunisia (+1.7 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of South Africa (-19.4 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Mauritius ($X), South Africa ($X) and Tunisia ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, with a combined 82% share of total exports.

Among the main exporting countries, Mauritius, with a CAGR of +55.0%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per unit, jumping by 16% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.7%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the export price increased by 45% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Tunisia ($X per unit), while Rwanda (less than $X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mauritius (+10.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Africa

In 2022, the amount of headgear of rubber or plastic imported in Africa declined slightly to X units, falling by -3.9% against 2021. In general, imports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 22% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X units in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, plastic headgear imports rose significantly to $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +1.5% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 22%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2022, South Africa (X units), distantly followed by Kenya (X units), Angola (X units), Ghana (X units), Tanzania (X units) and Algeria (X units) represented the largest importers of headgear of rubber or plastic, together achieving 62% of total imports. The following importers - Cote d'Ivoire (X units), Morocco (X units), Mauritius (X units), Burkina Faso (X units), Malawi (X units), Namibia (X units) and Nigeria (X units) - together made up 18% of total imports.

South Africa experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of imports of headgear of rubber or plastic. At the same time, Cote d'Ivoire (+18.4%), Tanzania (+9.8%), Kenya (+9.6%), Mauritius (+7.9%), Nigeria (+6.8%), Angola (+6.8%), Burkina Faso (+3.5%) and Malawi (+1.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Cote d'Ivoire emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +18.4% from 2012-2022. Morocco experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Ghana (-2.6%), Namibia (-3.0%) and Algeria (-7.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Kenya (+6.2 p.p.), Angola (+4.8 p.p.), Tanzania (+3.6 p.p.), Cote d'Ivoire (+3 p.p.) and Mauritius (+1.6 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Ghana (-1.8 p.p.) and Algeria (-5.8 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported headgear of rubber or plastic in Africa, comprising 27% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Morocco ($X), with a 12% share of total imports. It was followed by Kenya, with a 9.4% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Africa was relatively modest. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Morocco (+13.7% per year) and Kenya (+11.8% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per unit, growing by 19% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.8%. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
