The African headphone market rose remarkably to $X in 2022, growing by 6% against the previous year. Overall, consumption recorded a resilient increase. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, headphone production reached $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production posted a resilient increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 57%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in Africa
In 2022, the amount of headphones exported in Africa fell markedly to X units, which is down by -20.9% compared with the year before. Overall, exports, however, posted a prominent expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 99%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X units, and then dropped notably in the following year.
In value terms, headphone exports dropped to $X in 2022. Total exports indicated a moderate increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +35.4% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 51% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X, and then reduced in the following year.
Exports by Country
South Africa prevails in exports structure, finishing at X units, which was near 91% of total exports in 2022. The following exporters - Nigeria (X units) and Morocco (X units) - each reached a 6% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to headphone exports from South Africa stood at +18.6%. At the same time, Nigeria (+37.3%) and Morocco (+11.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Nigeria emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +37.3% from 2012-2022. While the share of South Africa (+28 p.p.) and Nigeria (+2.9 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest headphone supplier in Africa, comprising 78% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Morocco ($X), with a 9.2% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Africa stood at +6.0%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Morocco (+13.4% per year) and Nigeria (+29.7% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per unit, with an increase of 14% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, continues to indicate a abrupt shrinkage. The level of export peaked at $X per unit in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Morocco ($X per unit), while South Africa ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Morocco (+1.7%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in Africa
In 2022, purchases abroad of headphones increased by 33% to X units, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. Total imports indicated a buoyant expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +52.4% against 2020 indices. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, headphone imports reduced to $X in 2022. In general, imports saw a buoyant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 25% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X, and then dropped in the following year.
Imports by Country
South Africa dominates imports structure, finishing at X units, which was approx. 83% of total imports in 2022. Mauritius (X units), Namibia (X units), Morocco (X units) and Egypt (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.
South Africa was also the fastest-growing in terms of the headphones imports, with a CAGR of +9.4% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Namibia (+7.2%) and Mauritius (+3.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Morocco experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Egypt (-16.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of South Africa increased by +22 percentage points. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported headphones in Africa, comprising 43% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Morocco ($X), with a 10% share of total imports. It was followed by Egypt, with a 9.9% share.
In South Africa, headphone imports expanded at an average annual rate of +9.1% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Morocco (+8.7% per year) and Egypt (+0.6% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per unit, which is down by -28.3% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, continues to indicate a modest increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when the import price increased by 41%. The level of import peaked at $X per unit in 2021, and then shrank markedly in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Morocco ($X per unit), while South Africa ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Egypt (+20.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
