Hearing Aid Market Size in Africa

For the fifth year in a row, the African hearing aid market recorded growth in sales value, which increased by 6.4% to $X in 2021. The total consumption indicated a buoyant increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.2% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, consumption increased by +54.4% against 2016 indices. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

Hearing Aid Production in Africa

In value terms, hearing aid production dropped modestly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total production indicated a noticeable increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.5% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production increased by +42.0% against 2016 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when the production volume increased by 20%. Over the period under review, production reached the peak level at $X in 2020, and then declined modestly in the following year.

Exports in Africa

In 2021, hearing aid exports in Africa contracted sharply to X units, declining by -47.6% against the previous year. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate measured growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 154%. The volume of export peaked at X units in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, hearing aid exports fell modestly to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, showed a resilient expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when exports increased by 70%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

South Africa dominates exports structure, recording X units, which was approx. 89% of total exports in 2021. The following exporters - Morocco (X units) and Namibia (X units) - together made up 6.1% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to hearing aid exports from South Africa stood at +4.8%. At the same time, Namibia (+59.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Namibia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +59.6% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Morocco (-13.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of South Africa and Namibia increased by +15 and +2.2 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest hearing aid supplier in Africa, comprising 83% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Morocco ($X), with a 5.6% share of total exports.

In South Africa, hearing aid exports expanded at an average annual rate of +7.0% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Morocco (+12.2% per year) and Namibia (+15.1% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Africa stood at $X per unit in 2021, rising by 83% against the previous year. In general, the export price continues to indicate perceptible growth. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per unit in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Morocco ($X per unit), while Namibia ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Morocco (+29.9%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Hearing Aid Imports

Imports in Africa

In 2021, imports of hearing aids (excl. parts and accessories) in Africa surged to X units, jumping by 101% on 2020. Over the period under review, imports saw strong growth. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, hearing aid imports soared to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +3.5% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

South Africa was the main importing country with an import of around X units, which reached 54% of total imports. Algeria (X units) held a 20% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Egypt (12%) and Morocco (7.7%). Tunisia (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

South Africa was also the fastest-growing in terms of the hearing aids (excl. parts and accessories) imports, with a CAGR of +21.7% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Morocco (+11.7%), Algeria (+6.7%), Tunisia (+3.8%) and Egypt (+1.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. While the share of South Africa (+30 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Tunisia (-1.7 p.p.), Algeria (-9.6 p.p.) and Egypt (-16.4 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X), Egypt ($X) and Morocco ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together accounting for 74% of total imports.

Among the main importing countries, Morocco, with a CAGR of +12.2%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per unit, with a decrease of -32.9% against the previous year. Overall, the import price saw a deep setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 an increase of 13% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per unit in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Tunisia ($X per unit), while South Africa ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
