In 2021, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in shipments abroad of heat pumps (other than air conditioning machines), when their volume increased by 337% to X units. Overall, exports, however, showed a mild decrease. The volume of export peaked at X units in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, heat pump exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, saw a perceptible descent. The level of export peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
South Africa dominates exports structure, accounting for X units, which was near 93% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Morocco (X units), mixing up a 4.5% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to heat pump exports from South Africa stood at -1.4%. At the same time, Morocco (+13.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Morocco emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +13.2% from 2012-2021. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Morocco increased by +3.2 percentage points, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest heat pump supplier in Africa, comprising 76% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Morocco ($X), with a 15% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa stood at -6.2%.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Africa stood at $X per unit in 2021, with a decrease of -44% against the previous year. In general, the export price continues to indicate a perceptible curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when the export price increased by 70%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per unit, and then reduced dramatically in the following year.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Morocco ($X per unit), while South Africa stood at $X per unit.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Morocco (+4.6%).

In 2021, overseas purchases of heat pumps (other than air conditioning machines) were finally on the rise to reach X units after two years of decline. Overall, imports, however, recorded a pronounced descent. The volume of import peaked at X units in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, heat pump imports rose markedly to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, recorded a abrupt setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 29% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2021, South Africa (X units) was the largest importer of heat pumps (other than air conditioning machines), comprising 46% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Nigeria (X units), Ghana (X units), Morocco (X units) and Tanzania (X units), together making up a 30% share of total imports. The following importers - Algeria (X units), Tunisia (X units) and Botswana (X units) - together made up 10% of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to heat pump imports into South Africa stood at -2.2%. At the same time, Ghana (+35.8%), Nigeria (+22.7%), Tanzania (+14.5%), Botswana (+2.6%) and Morocco (+1.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Ghana emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +35.8% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Tunisia (-9.9%) and Algeria (-11.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Nigeria (+9.7 p.p.), Ghana (+9.3 p.p.) and Tanzania (+3.5 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Tunisia (-3.8 p.p.) and Algeria (-6.4 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported heat pumps (other than air conditioning machines) in Africa, comprising 50% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Nigeria ($X), with a 10% share of total imports. It was followed by Morocco, with an 8.9% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Africa amounted to -4.4%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Nigeria (+9.9% per year) and Morocco (+3.2% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Africa stood at $X per unit in 2021, shrinking by -18% against the previous year. Overall, the import price continues to indicate a perceptible shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when the import price increased by 28% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per unit. From 2019 to 2021, the import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Morocco ($X per unit), while Ghana ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Morocco (+1.9%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
