Exports in Africa

In 2022, overseas shipments of hemp tow decreased by -26.3% to X tons, falling for the fifth year in a row after three years of growth. Overall, exports continue to indicate a perceptible descent. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 50% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, hemp tow exports totaled $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, posted a strong increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 219% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

Exports by Country

Mauritius (X tons) and Lesotho (X tons) prevails in exports structure, together mixing up 80% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Egypt (X tons) and Zimbabwe (X tons), together achieving a 15% share of total exports. South Africa (X tons) held a relatively small share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Lesotho (with a CAGR of +8,147.6%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest hemp tow supplier in Africa, comprising 63% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Lesotho ($X), with a 17% share of total exports. It was followed by Zimbabwe, with a 9% share.

In South Africa, hemp tow exports expanded at an average annual rate of +49.7% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Lesotho (+1,591.3% per year) and Zimbabwe (+2,150.8% per year).

Imports in Africa

In 2022, purchases abroad of hemp tow decreased by -1.1% to X tons, falling for the third consecutive year after three years of growth. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a buoyant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 137%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, hemp tow imports declined modestly to $X in 2022. Overall, imports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 70%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, Nigeria (X tons) represented the key importer of hemp tow, constituting 44% of total imports. South Africa (X tons) took a 23% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Sudan (12%). Morocco (X tons), Niger (X tons), Egypt (X tons), Namibia (X tons) and Mozambique (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

In Nigeria, hemp tow imports expanded at an average annual rate of +12.2% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Sudan (+9.3% per year) and South Africa (+2.1% per year).
