Herbicide Market Size in Africa

The African herbicide market fell modestly to $X in 2021, therefore, remained relatively stable against the previous year. The total consumption indicated a resilient increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.2% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, consumption increased by +28.8% against 2019 indices. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2020, and then fell modestly in the following year.

In value terms, herbicide production reduced to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total production indicated a measured increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.5% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production increased by +35.8% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when the production volume increased by 31% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2020, and then dropped in the following year.

Exports in Africa

Herbicide exports contracted notably to X tons in 2021, declining by -20% compared with 2020 figures. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when exports increased by 19% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, herbicide exports fell to $X in 2021. Overall, exports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when exports increased by 28%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

South Africa dominates exports structure, reaching X tons, which was approx. 85% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Nigeria (X tons), mixing up a 6.8% share of total exports. Egypt (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

South Africa experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of herbicides. At the same time, Nigeria (+24.0%) and Egypt (+18.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Nigeria emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +24.0% from 2012-2021. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Nigeria and Egypt increased by +5.8 and +2.7 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest herbicide supplier in Africa, comprising 92% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Egypt ($X), with a 1.7% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Africa was relatively modest. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Egypt (+17.0% per year) and Nigeria (+14.7% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 24% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Nigeria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (-0.0%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Herbicide Imports

Imports in Africa

Herbicide imports contracted to X tons in 2021, falling by -13.5% compared with 2020. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a resilient expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 43% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons, and then contracted in the following year.

In value terms, herbicide imports expanded rapidly to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a remarkable increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.2% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +40.7% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 40% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to see steady growth in the near future.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Nigeria (X tons) represented the largest importer of herbicides, constituting 35% of total imports. Ghana (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 14% share, followed by South Africa (11%), Cote d'Ivoire (8%) and Cameroon (6.8%). Guinea (X tons), Tanzania (X tons), Kenya (X tons), Ethiopia (X tons) and Sudan (X tons) held a minor share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to herbicide imports into Nigeria stood at +7.8%. At the same time, Ethiopia (+19.6%), Cameroon (+19.0%), Tanzania (+16.3%), Cote d'Ivoire (+16.1%), Sudan (+16.0%), Guinea (+12.7%), Kenya (+5.7%) and South Africa (+4.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Ethiopia emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +19.6% from 2012-2021. Ghana experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. While the share of Cote d'Ivoire (+4.1 p.p.), Cameroon (+4.1 p.p.), Nigeria (+1.9 p.p.), Ethiopia (+1.6 p.p.) and Tanzania (+1.5 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of South Africa (-2.5 p.p.) and Ghana (-11.4 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest herbicide importing markets in Africa were Nigeria ($X), South Africa ($X) and Ghana ($X), together comprising 52% of total imports. Cote d'Ivoire, Cameroon, Ethiopia, Tanzania, Kenya, Sudan and Guinea lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 28%.

Among the main importing countries, Ethiopia, with a CAGR of +26.4%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 24% against the previous year. Overall, the import price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Ethiopia ($X per ton), while Nigeria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
