Canned Meat Market Size in Africa
The African canned meat market shrank to $X in 2021, which is down by -7% against the previous year. The total consumption indicated a moderate expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.9% over the last nine years. In 2021, exports of canned meat in Africa contracted to X tons, waning by -7.5% compared with the previous year's figure. Overall, exports recorded a pronounced decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 50%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, canned meat exports expanded remarkably to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 30% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
South Africa prevails in exports structure, amounting to X tons, which was near 87% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Egypt (X tons), constituting a 6.8% share of total exports. Morocco (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Exports from South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of -2.1% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Egypt (+1.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Egypt emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +1.1% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Morocco (-15.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. South Africa (+17 p.p.) and Egypt (+2.7 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Morocco saw its share reduced by -3.3% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest canned meat supplier in Africa, comprising 83% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Egypt ($X), with an 11% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Africa amounted to +2.8%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Egypt (+5.2% per year) and Morocco (-17.8% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 20% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +4.2%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while Morocco ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+4.9%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

In 2021, approx. X tons of canned meat were imported in Africa; picking up by 18% on the year before. In general, imports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, canned meat imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a mild decrease. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Ghana (X tons), Angola (X tons), Gambia (X tons), Morocco (X tons), Congo (X tons), Mauritius (X tons), Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), Cabo Verde (X tons), Gabon (X tons), Botswana (X tons), South Africa (X tons) and Lesotho (X tons) represented roughly 68% of total imports in 2021. Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Gambia (with a CAGR of +14.1%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest canned meat importing markets in Africa were Mauritius ($X), Morocco ($X) and Angola ($X), together accounting for 25% of total imports.
Morocco, with a CAGR of +14.1%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, growing by 3.1% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, showed a mild decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 5.1% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Mauritius ($X per ton), while Ghana ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
