Overall, imports showed a mild contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 39%. The volume of import peaked at X units in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, horizontal machining centre imports fell sharply to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a noticeable descent. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 42%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported horizontal machining centres for working metal in Africa, comprising 36% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Tunisia ($X), with a 15% share of total imports. It was followed by Egypt, with a 15% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Africa totaled -5.3%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Tunisia (-7.1% per year) and Egypt (+21.5% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per unit, falling by -5.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when the import price increased by 57%.
