Production of Horse, Mule and Donkey Meat in Africa
In value terms, horse, mule and donkey meat production expanded to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the production volume increased by 22%. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2019 to 2022, production growth remained at a lower figure.
The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2022 were Niger (X tons), Senegal (X tons) and Kenya (X tons), with a combined 64% share of total production.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Niger (with a CAGR of +2.5%), while production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In 2022, the average horse, mule and donkey meat yield in Africa shrank to X kg per head, waning by -1.7% on the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, the yield, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 3.7%. As a result, the yield attained the peak level of X kg per head, and then dropped slightly in the following year.
In 2022, approx. X heads of animals slaughtered for horse, mule and donkey meat production in Africa; surging by 1.9% against 2021. Overall, the number of producing animals showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the number of producing animals increased by 5.7% against the previous year. As a result, the amount of producing animals reached the peak level of X heads. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of this number remained at a lower figure.

Exports in Africa
In 2022, approx. X tons of horse, mule and donkey meat were exported in Africa; which is down by -14.9% against 2021. Overall, exports, however, enjoyed a remarkable increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when exports increased by 386%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, horse, mule and donkey meat exports dropped to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a strong expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when exports increased by 270%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
Kenya dominates exports structure, resulting at X tons, which was approx. 94% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Benin (X tons), making up a 4.9% share of total exports.
Exports from Kenya increased at an average annual rate of +8.9% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Benin (+251.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Benin emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +251.8% from 2012-2022. While the share of Benin (+4.9 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Kenya ($X) remains the largest horse, mule and donkey meat supplier in Africa, comprising 95% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Benin ($X), with a 2.4% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Kenya totaled +8.5%.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, leveling off at the previous year. In general, the export price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 an increase of 31%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2021 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Kenya ($X per ton), while Benin amounted to $X per ton.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Kenya (-0.4%).
Imports of Horse, Mule and Donkey Meat
Imports in Africa
In 2022, imports of horse, mule and donkey meat in Africa skyrocketed to X tons, jumping by 80% compared with the previous year's figure. Overall, imports, however, recorded a drastic downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 100% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, horse, mule and donkey meat imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a deep slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 95%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Comoros (X tons) represented the major importer of horse, mule and donkey meat, mixing up 60% of total imports. It was distantly followed by South Africa (X tons), creating a 29% share of total imports. The following importers - Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), Ghana (X tons) and Lesotho (X tons) - together made up 8.4% of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to horse, mule and donkey meat imports into Comoros stood at +6.7%. At the same time, Ghana (+41.3%) and Lesotho (+21.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Ghana emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +41.3% from 2012-2022. By contrast, South Africa (-14.9%) and Cote d'Ivoire (-15.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Comoros (+49 p.p.) and Ghana (+2.6 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Cote d'Ivoire (-4.1 p.p.) and South Africa (-22.2 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Comoros ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported horse, mule and donkey meat in Africa, comprising 60% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by South Africa ($X), with a 22% share of total imports. It was followed by Cote d'Ivoire, with an 8.1% share.
In Comoros, horse, mule and donkey meat imports increased at an average annual rate of +7.6% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: South Africa (-19.0% per year) and Cote d'Ivoire (-7.8% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, declining by -18.3% against the previous year. In general, the import price saw a pronounced shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 an increase of 37%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Lesotho ($X per ton), while Ghana ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
