In 2021, after five years of growth, there was decline in the African hot-rolled round stainless steel market, when its value decreased by -3.4% to $X. In general, consumption, however, recorded a remarkable increase. Over the period under review, the market reached the maximum level at $X in 2020, and then reduced in the following year.

From 2019 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, hot-rolled round stainless steel exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, recorded a drastic downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when exports increased by 85% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In 2021, Egypt (X tons) was the major exporter of hot-rolled round bars of stainless steel, constituting 60% of total exports. South Africa (X tons) held a 28% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Kenya (5.2%) and Tanzania (4.9%).

Egypt was also the fastest-growing in terms of the hot-rolled round bars of stainless steel exports, with a CAGR of +14.9% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Tanzania (+4.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Kenya (-8.4%) and South Africa (-28.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Egypt, Tanzania and Kenya increased by +57, +4.4 and +3.4 percentage points, respectively.

In 2021, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, rising by 22% against the previous year. Overall, the export price enjoyed a prominent increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when the export price increased by 6,070%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2020 to 2021, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Tanzania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+13.0%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in Africa

After two years of decline, purchases abroad of hot-rolled round bars of stainless steel increased by 22% to X tons in 2021. Overall, imports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 129% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, hot-rolled round stainless steel imports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a perceptible slump. The level of import peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, South Africa (X tons), Algeria (X tons), Egypt (X tons) and Morocco (X tons) was the key importer of hot-rolled round bars of stainless steel in Africa, generating 66% of total import. It was distantly followed by Tunisia (X tons), constituting a 5.7% share of total imports. The following importers - Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons), Guinea-Bissau (X tons), Swaziland (X tons), Kenya (X tons), Mozambique (X tons), Cabo Verde (X tons), Namibia (X tons) and Gambia (X tons) - together made up 15% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Guinea-Bissau (with a CAGR of +58.7%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest hot-rolled round stainless steel importing markets in Africa were South Africa ($X), Algeria ($X) and Egypt ($X), with a combined 56% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Morocco, Tunisia, Mozambique, Swaziland, Cabo Verde, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Kenya, Namibia, Guinea-Bissau and Gambia, which together accounted for a further 32%.

In terms of the main importing countries, Guinea-Bissau, with a CAGR of +34.0%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 5.8% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, recorded a perceptible curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 93%. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Tunisia ($X per ton), while Gambia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
