In value terms, tissue paper exports totaled $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, recorded buoyant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 71%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Egypt was the key exporting country with an export of about X tons, which recorded 51% of total exports. Tunisia (X tons) held a 25% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by South Africa (10%) and Algeria (9.4%).

Exports from Egypt increased at an average annual rate of +32.0% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Algeria (+48.1%), Tunisia (+11.1%) and South Africa (+2.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Algeria emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +48.1% from 2012-2022. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Egypt and Algeria increased by +36 and +8.5 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, Egypt ($X) remains the largest tissue paper supplier in Africa, comprising 62% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Tunisia ($X), with a 19% share of total exports. It was followed by South Africa, with an 8.8% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Egypt totaled +33.5%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Tunisia (+8.4% per year) and South Africa (+5.9% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 18% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.7%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while Algeria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Imports in Africa

Tissue paper imports rose to X tons in 2022, picking up by 3.7% against the previous year's figure. Total imports indicated a resilient expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +7.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +106.6% against 2013 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 36%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, tissue paper imports rose significantly to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated strong growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +81.0% against 2013 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when imports increased by 29% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In 2022, Kenya (X tons), distantly followed by Ghana (X tons), South Africa (X tons), Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), Morocco (X tons) and Angola (X tons) were the major importers of toilet or facial tissue stock, towel and similar paper, together mixing up 57% of total imports. The following importers - Egypt (X tons), Tunisia (X tons), Zimbabwe (X tons), Cameroon (X tons), Libya (X tons), Mauritius (X tons) and Tanzania (X tons) - together made up 25% of total imports.

Kenya was also the fastest-growing in terms of the toilet or facial tissue stock, towel and similar paper imports, with a CAGR of +43.5% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Egypt (+38.0%), Ghana (+25.9%), Tanzania (+12.4%), Cote d'Ivoire (+12.0%), Angola (+10.6%), Zimbabwe (+8.6%), Cameroon (+8.1%), Morocco (+7.5%), Libya (+6.2%) and Mauritius (+2.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. In value terms, Kenya ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported toilet or facial tissue stock, towel and similar paper in Africa, comprising 19% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Ghana ($X), with an 8.3% share of total imports. It was followed by South Africa, with an 8% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Kenya totaled +44.2%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Ghana (+23.0% per year) and South Africa (-0.4% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, surging by 3.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, recorded a slight decrease. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when the import price increased by 5.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
