The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, increasing by 15% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +4.0%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while Algeria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+8.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Washing and drying machine imports stood at X tons in 2021, picking up by 15% on the previous year's figure. Overall, imports, however, showed a slight reduction. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Morocco (+16 p.p.), Nigeria (+5.1 p.p.) and Kenya (+1.5 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Libya, Egypt, Angola, South Africa and Algeria saw its share reduced by -2.8%, -2.8%, -3.2%, -8.1% and -12.6% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Morocco ($X), Egypt ($X) and South Africa ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together comprising 57% of total imports. These countries were followed by Libya, Nigeria, Algeria, Tunisia, Angola, Kenya and Ghana, which together accounted for a further 28%.

Nigeria, with a CAGR of +16.3%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 4.4% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, continues to indicate a slight slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when the import price increased by 4.8%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, major importing countries recorded the following prices: in South Africa ($X per ton) and Egypt ($X per ton), while Tunisia ($X per ton) and Libya ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
