Hydrogen Chloride Market Size in Africa

In 2021, overseas shipments of hydrogen chloride (hydrochloric acid) increased by 12% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a mild shrinkage. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 47% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, hydrogen chloride exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, exports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of export peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
Egypt was the main exporter of hydrogen chloride (hydrochloric acid) in Africa, with the volume of exports reaching X tons, which was near 69% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by South Africa (X tons), comprising a 22% share of total exports. Kenya (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to hydrogen chloride exports from Egypt stood at +6.5%. At the same time, Kenya (+27.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Kenya emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +27.2% from 2012-2021. By contrast, South Africa (-11.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Egypt (+35 p.p.) and Kenya (+3.1 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while South Africa saw its share reduced by -36.7% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.
In value terms, Egypt ($X), South Africa ($X) and Kenya ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, with a combined 95% share of total exports.
Kenya, with a CAGR of +18.0%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, jumping by 52% against the previous year. Export price indicated pronounced growth from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.4% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, hydrogen chloride export price increased by +83.5% against 2018 indices. As a result, the export price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Kenya ($X per ton), while Egypt ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+7.1%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

In 2021, overseas purchases of hydrogen chloride (hydrochloric acid) increased by 26% to X tons, rising for the fifth consecutive year after four years of decline. Total imports indicated a moderate increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.1% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +72.7% against 2016 indices. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, hydrogen chloride imports surged to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a temperate increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.5% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +96.0% against 2016 indices. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
In 2021, South Africa (X tons), distantly followed by Nigeria (X tons), Kenya (X tons) and Ghana (X tons) represented the main importers of hydrogen chloride (hydrochloric acid), together creating 60% of total imports. Tanzania (X tons), Guinea (X tons), Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), Senegal (X tons), Namibia (X tons), Burkina Faso (X tons), Ethiopia (X tons), Mali (X tons) and Mauritius (X tons) took a little share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by South Africa (with a CAGR of +71.1%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, South Africa ($X), Nigeria ($X) and Kenya ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 46% share of total imports.
South Africa, with a CAGR of +38.7%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, recorded a slight setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 an increase of 12%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Ethiopia ($X per ton), while Kenya ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
