Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X units in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, pharmaceutical rubber articles exports soared to $X in 2021. Total exports indicated a measured increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.0% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +7.7% against 2017 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when exports increased by 25% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

South Africa was the largest exporter of hygienic or pharmaceutical articles of rubber in Africa, with the volume of exports finishing at X units, which was near 80% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Zambia (X units), constituting a 13% share of total exports. Egypt (X units) took a little share of total exports.

South Africa experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of hygienic or pharmaceutical articles of rubber. At the same time, Zambia (+48.5%) and Egypt (+7.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Zambia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +48.5% from 2012-2021. While the share of Zambia (+12 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of South Africa (-3.5 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest pharmaceutical rubber articles supplier in Africa, comprising 74% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Zambia ($X), with a 16% share of total exports.

In South Africa, pharmaceutical rubber articles exports increased at an average annual rate of +1.3% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Zambia (+54.8% per year) and Egypt (+1.6% per year).

In 2021, approx. X units of hygienic or pharmaceutical articles of rubber were imported in Africa; surging by 8.6% on the previous year's figure. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 52%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X units. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, pharmaceutical rubber articles imports contracted to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 56% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

South Africa was the largest importing country with an import of about X units, which accounted for 46% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Morocco (X units), Nigeria (X units) and Algeria (X units), together constituting a 21% share of total imports. The following importers - Sudan (X units), Democratic Republic of the Congo (X units), Burkina Faso (X units), Namibia (X units) and Tanzania (X units) - together made up 15% of total imports.

Imports into South Africa increased at an average annual rate of +6.1% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Democratic Republic of the Congo (+37.4%), Tanzania (+35.1%), Morocco (+20.4%), Burkina Faso (+10.7%), Namibia (+6.3%), Sudan (+3.8%), Algeria (+3.3%) and Nigeria (+2.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Democratic Republic of the Congo emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +37.4% from 2012-2021. South Africa (+15 p.p.), Morocco (+7 p.p.), Democratic Republic of the Congo (+3.5 p.p.), Tanzania (+2.2 p.p.) and Burkina Faso (+1.5 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported hygienic or pharmaceutical articles of rubber in Africa, comprising 34% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Morocco ($X), with a 16% share of total imports. It was followed by Algeria, with an 8.5% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Africa was relatively modest. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Morocco (+19.5% per year) and Algeria (+1.4% per year).
