Overall, exports showed a noticeable contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 21% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, hypochlorites, chlorites and hypobromites exports expanded notably to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 21%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Tunisia represented the largest exporting country with an export of about X tons, which accounted for 45% of total exports. South Africa (X tons) took a 30% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Senegal (8.5%) and Egypt (6.7%). Morocco (X tons) and Kenya (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Morocco (with a CAGR of +14.6%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest hypochlorites, chlorites and hypobromites supplier in Africa, comprising 60% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Tunisia ($X), with an 11% share of total exports. It was followed by Senegal, with a 7.5% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Africa stood at +5.4%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Tunisia (-9.8% per year) and Senegal (-4.2% per year).

In 2022, overseas purchases of hypochlorites, commercial calcium hypochlorite, chlorites and hypobromites decreased by -9.1% to X tons, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. Over the period under review, imports saw a perceptible curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 22%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

Libya was the key importing country with an import of about X tons, which amounted to 23% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Angola (X tons), generating a 4.9% share of total imports. Egypt (X tons), Cabo Verde (X tons), Ghana (X tons), Mauritius (X tons), Zimbabwe (X tons), South Africa (X tons), Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), Nigeria (X tons), Cameroon (X tons), Algeria (X tons) and Zambia (X tons) took a relatively small share of total imports.

Libya was also the fastest-growing in terms of the hypochlorites, commercial calcium hypochlorite, chlorites and hypobromites imports, with a CAGR of +9.5% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Cabo Verde (+4.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Egypt, Mauritius, Zimbabwe, Ghana and Cameroon experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Cote d'Ivoire (-1.3%), Zambia (-1.4%), Nigeria (-5.0%), Angola (-8.6%), South Africa (-9.7%) and Algeria (-27.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. In value terms, the largest hypochlorites, chlorites and hypobromites importing markets in Africa were Egypt ($X), Angola ($X) and South Africa ($X), with a combined 22% share of total imports. Libya, Mauritius, Zimbabwe, Ghana, Cote d'Ivoire, Cameroon, Nigeria, Zambia, Algeria and Cabo Verde lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 36%.

Cabo Verde, with a CAGR of +11.1%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 4.7% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.3%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 an increase of 24%. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in years to come.
