Exports in Africa
In 2021, approx. X tons of i-sections of non-alloy steel were exported in Africa; remaining stable against 2020. Overall, exports, however, saw a abrupt decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 65% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, non-alloy steel i-sections exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a abrupt descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 54%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
South Africa was the largest exporter of i-sections of non-alloy steel in Africa, with the volume of exports amounting to X tons, which was near 40% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Ghana (X tons), Senegal (X tons), Egypt (X tons), Tunisia (X tons) and Angola (X tons), together committing a 44% share of total exports. Kenya (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Exports from South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of -17.6% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Angola (+70.4%), Ghana (+13.3%), Kenya (+10.9%) and Senegal (+8.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Angola emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +70.4% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Egypt (-9.0%) and Tunisia (-11.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Ghana, Senegal, Angola and Kenya increased by +12, +11, +5.2 and +2.7 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest non-alloy steel i-sections supplier in Africa, comprising 44% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Senegal ($X), with a 10% share of total exports. It was followed by Ghana, with a 9.8% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Africa totaled -14.4%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Senegal (+5.3% per year) and Ghana (+8.8% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, jumping by 44% against the previous year. Export price indicated perceptible growth from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.0% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, non-alloy steel i-sections export price increased by +40.9% against 2017 indices. As a result, the export price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Tunisia ($X per ton), while Ghana ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Angola (+10.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Africa
Non-alloy steel i-sections imports expanded remarkably to X tons in 2021, surging by 12% on the previous year. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.4% from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 33% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure in 2021 and are likely to see steady growth in years to come.
In value terms, non-alloy steel i-sections imports surged to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a measured expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.8% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Algeria (X tons) and Morocco (X tons) represented the main importers of i-sections of non-alloy steel in Africa, together mixing up 50% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Egypt (X tons), Tunisia (X tons), South Africa (X tons) and Kenya (X tons), together creating a 24% share of total imports. Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), Libya (X tons), Nigeria (X tons), Ghana (X tons), Senegal (X tons) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons) took a minor share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Democratic Republic of the Congo (with a CAGR of +28.0%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest non-alloy steel i-sections importing markets in Africa were Algeria ($X), Morocco ($X) and Egypt ($X), with a combined 60% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Tunisia, Kenya, South Africa, Cote d'Ivoire, Libya, Ghana, Senegal, Nigeria and Democratic Republic of the Congo, which together accounted for a further 28%.
In terms of the main importing countries, Ghana, with a CAGR of +27.4%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, surging by 39% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while South Africa ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Ghana (+0.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
