The African skates market was finally on the rise to reach $X in 2021, after three years of decline. Over the period under review, consumption, however, showed a slight downturn. Mauritius dominates exports structure, finishing at X tons, which was near 84% of total exports in 2021. Madagascar (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, followed by South Africa (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 12% share of total exports. Cameroon (X tons) held a minor share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to skates exports from Mauritius stood at +132.1%. At the same time, Cameroon (+137.9%) and South Africa (+2.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Cameroon emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +137.9% from 2012-2021. Madagascar experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. Mauritius (+84 p.p.) and Cameroon (+3.5 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while South Africa and Madagascar saw its share reduced by -19.6% and -31.6% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In 2021, the amount of ice skates and roller skates imported in Africa soared to X tons, rising by 83% compared with the year before. In general, imports, however, saw a noticeable curtailment. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

The following importers - Egypt (X tons) and Angola (X tons) - each resulted at a 6.1% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to skates imports into Algeria stood at +23.7%. At the same time, Mauritius (+34.8%), Morocco (+13.1%) and Egypt (+4.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mauritius emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +34.8% from 2012-2021. Angola experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, South Africa (-8.4%) and Libya (-9.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Algeria (+36 p.p.), Mauritius (+12 p.p.), Morocco (+8.9 p.p.) and Egypt (+1.6 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of South Africa (-6.4 p.p.) and Libya (-8.9 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Algeria ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported ice skates and roller skates in Africa, comprising 31% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Mauritius ($X), with a 15% share of total imports. It was followed by Morocco, with a 14% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Algeria totaled +39.2%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Mauritius (+31.3% per year) and Morocco (+18.2% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 11% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 an increase of 18%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2016 to 2021, the import prices remained at a lower figure.
