After two years of decline, the African ignition magneto market increased by 2.4% to $X in 2021. In general, consumption recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X units in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, ignition magneto exports surged to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, recorded a drastic downturn. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Niger represented the largest exporting country with an export of about X units, which finished at 45% of total exports. South Africa (X units) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Kenya (X units), Ethiopia (X units) and Tanzania (X units). All these countries together took near 31% share of total exports. Egypt (X units), Nigeria (X units), Burkina Faso (X units), Algeria (X units), Rwanda (X units) and Morocco (X units) held a relatively small share of total exports.

Niger was also the fastest-growing in terms of the ignition magnetos, magneto-dynamos and magnetic flywheels exports, with a CAGR of +786.4% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Kenya (+79.5%), Burkina Faso (+30.2%), Algeria (+20.8%), Ethiopia (+19.5%), Tanzania (+19.4%), Morocco (+18.6%), Rwanda (+8.1%) and Nigeria (+3.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Egypt (-5.5%) and South Africa (-19.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Niger (+45 p.p.), Kenya (+8.3 p.p.), Ethiopia (+4.3 p.p.), Tanzania (+4.2 p.p.), Burkina Faso (+3.3 p.p.), Nigeria (+2.4 p.p.) and Algeria (+2.2 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of South Africa (-38.1 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest ignition magneto supplier in Africa, comprising 50% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Niger ($X), with a 16% share of total exports. It was followed by Tanzania, with a 12% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Africa stood at -9.6%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Niger (+798.6% per year) and Tanzania (+31.5% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Africa stood at $X per unit in 2021, with a decrease of -8.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the export price increased by 82% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the maximum at $X per unit in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per unit), while Rwanda ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Morocco (+13.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, approx. X units of ignition magnetos, magneto-dynamos and magnetic flywheels were imported in Africa; jumping by 23% against the previous year. Total imports indicated prominent growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +8.5% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +8.0% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 42% against the previous year. From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Djibouti (with a CAGR of +62.1%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest ignition magneto importing markets in Africa were Ghana ($X), Sierra Leone ($X) and Ethiopia ($X), together accounting for 42% of total imports.

Sierra Leone, with a CAGR of +62.4%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The import price in Africa stood at $X per unit in 2021, rising by 41% against the previous year. Overall, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Sierra Leone ($X per unit), while Rwanda ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
