Exports from South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of -8.5% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Swaziland (+24.5%), Egypt (+19.0%) and Tunisia (+11.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Swaziland emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +24.5% from 2012-2022. Tunisia (+6.1 p.p.), Swaziland (+5.2 p.p.) and Egypt (+4.9 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while South Africa saw its share reduced by -4.9% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest industrial bakery machinery supplier in Africa, comprising 86% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Egypt ($X), with a 5.5% share of total exports. It was followed by Swaziland, with a 3.4% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Africa amounted to -1.6%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Egypt (+14.7% per year) and Swaziland (+23.0% per year).

Total imports indicated notable growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports decreased by -8.4% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 53%. The volume of import peaked at X units in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, industrial bakery machinery imports totaled $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +2.7% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 33%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In 2022, Nigeria (X units), distantly followed by Algeria (X units), Morocco (X units), Libya (X units), Angola (X units), Ethiopia (X units) and Cameroon (X units) were the main importers of industrial bakery machinery, together achieving 64% of total imports. The following importers - Egypt (X units), Sudan (X units), Cote d'Ivoire (X units), Ghana (X units), South Africa (X units) and Tunisia (X units) - together made up 19% of total imports.

Imports into Nigeria increased at an average annual rate of +4.4% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Libya (+33.2%), Cote d'Ivoire (+22.7%), Cameroon (+14.4%), Sudan (+11.6%), Ethiopia (+10.7%), Morocco (+9.9%), Ghana (+9.5%) and Angola (+6.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Libya emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +33.2% from 2012-2022. Egypt and Tunisia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Algeria (-1.1%) and South Africa (-7.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Libya (+7.1 p.p.), Morocco (+3.3 p.p.), Cameroon (+3.1 p.p.), Ethiopia (+3 p.p.), Cote d'Ivoire (+2.6 p.p.), Angola (+1.8 p.p.) and Sudan (+1.7 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Tunisia (-1.7 p.p.), Egypt (-2.1 p.p.), Algeria (-5.8 p.p.) and South Africa (-6 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Nigeria ($X), Angola ($X) and Algeria ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together accounting for 36% of total imports. Libya, Ethiopia, Morocco, Egypt, South Africa, Cameroon, Ghana, Tunisia, Cote d'Ivoire and Sudan lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 51%.

Libya, with a CAGR of +40.2%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Africa stood at $X per unit in 2022, reducing by -6.1% against the previous year. Overall, the import price recorded a mild decline. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when the import price increased by 16% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per unit in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per unit), while Nigeria ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Ghana (+9.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
