In 2022, overseas purchases of industrial machinery for the manufacture or preparation of sugar decreased by -23.8% to X units for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Overall, imports saw a abrupt contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 200%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X units in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, sugar-manufacturing industrial machinery imports reduced slightly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports saw a abrupt slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 51% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Tanzania dominates imports structure, accounting for X units, which was approx. 68% of total imports in 2022. The second position in the ranking was taken by Uganda ($X), with a 10% share of total imports. It was followed by Algeria, with a 6.8% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Tanzania amounted to +70.4%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Uganda (-5.8% per year) and Algeria (+13.2% per year).
