In value terms, fruit-preparation industrial machinery exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, exports saw prominent growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 66% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

South Africa prevails in exports structure, recording X units, which was approx. 93% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Egypt (X units), making up a 4.6% share of total exports.

South Africa was also the fastest-growing in terms of the industrial machinery for the preparation of fruits, nuts or vegetables exports, with a CAGR of +42.8% from 2012 to 2021. Egypt experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. In value terms, fruit-preparation industrial machinery imports contracted markedly to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a noticeable expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.1% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when imports increased by 62%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

It was distantly followed by Madagascar (X units), Algeria (X units), Zambia (X units) and Egypt (X units), together generating a 31% share of total imports. Botswana (X units), Malawi (X units), Morocco (X units), Nigeria (X units), Kenya (X units), Libya (X units), Somalia (X units) and Mozambique (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the share of Madagascar, Zambia, Egypt, Algeria, Botswana, Malawi, Morocco, Somalia, Mozambique, Nigeria, Libya and Kenya increased by +14, +5, +3.9, +3.9, +3.5, +2.7, +2.6, +2.3, +2.3, +2.3, +2.2 and +1.7 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, Nigeria ($X), Algeria ($X) and Egypt ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together accounting for 38% of total imports. These countries were followed by Morocco, South Africa, Zambia, Madagascar, Kenya, Mozambique, Libya, Malawi, Botswana and Somalia, which together accounted for a further 26%.

Among the main importing countries, Madagascar, with a CAGR of +53.3%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per unit, reducing by -18% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, saw resilient growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 an increase of 186%. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum at $X per unit in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Nigeria ($X per unit), while Botswana ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
