In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest industrial sewing machines (non-automatic) supplier in Africa, comprising 52% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Madagascar ($X), with a 14% share of total exports. It was followed by Tunisia, with an 8.8% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa was relatively modest. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Madagascar (+12.4% per year) and Tunisia (-13.9% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Africa stood at $X per unit in 2022, growing by 25% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, saw a perceptible shrinkage. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 an increase of 213% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per unit in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Madagascar ($X per unit), while South Africa ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (-0.8%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 49%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X units in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, industrial sewing machines (non-automatic) imports rose slightly to $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Imports into Nigeria increased at an average annual rate of +15.7% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Djibouti (+31.4%), Togo (+26.7%), Ethiopia (+18.1%), Mozambique (+15.4%), Tanzania (+13.8%), Ghana (+11.1%), Kenya (+10.5%), Senegal (+9.8%), Morocco (+4.4%), Algeria (+3.8%) and Egypt (+1.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Djibouti emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +31.4% from 2012-2022. By contrast, South Africa (-1.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Nigeria (+14 p.p.), Ethiopia (+2.9 p.p.), Togo (+2.4 p.p.), Djibouti (+2.2 p.p.), Ghana (+1.9 p.p.) and Mozambique (+1.6 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Morocco (-1.6 p.p.), Algeria (-3.1 p.p.), Egypt (-8.8 p.p.) and South Africa (-9.4 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, the largest industrial sewing machines (non-automatic) importing markets in Africa were Nigeria ($X), Morocco ($X) and South Africa ($X), with a combined 47% share of total imports. Ethiopia, Egypt, Algeria, Ghana, Djibouti, Kenya, Tanzania, Senegal, Togo and Mozambique lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 34%.
Djibouti, with a CAGR of +29.7%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Africa stood at $X per unit in 2022, falling by -12.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price saw a noticeable contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when the import price increased by 29% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per unit in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Morocco ($X per unit), while Mozambique ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
