In 2021, the African industrial robot market decreased by -2.1% to $X for the first time since 2015, thus ending a five-year rising trend. Overall, consumption saw buoyant growth. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2020, and then contracted modestly in the following year.

In value terms, industrial robot production declined slightly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production recorded a resilient increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 52% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production attained the maximum level at $X in 2020, and then reduced slightly in the following year.

Exports in Africa

Industrial robot exports surged to X units in 2021, with an increase of 312% on 2020. In general, exports saw a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 626%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

In value terms, industrial robot exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, exports showed a buoyant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 199% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Morocco prevails in exports structure, recording X units, which was near 93% of total exports in 2021. The following exporters - South Africa (X units) and Tunisia (X units) - each reached a 4.9% share of total exports.

Morocco was also the fastest-growing in terms of the industrial robots for multiple uses exports, with a CAGR of +47.5% from 2012 to 2021. South Africa experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. Tunisia (-5.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Morocco (+66 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while South Africa and Tunisia saw its share reduced by -22.4% and -37% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, the largest industrial robot supplying countries in Africa were Morocco ($X), South Africa ($X) and Tunisia ($X), together comprising 92% of total exports.

Among the main exporting countries, Morocco, with a CAGR of +19.1%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per unit, dropping by -66.6% against the previous year. Overall, the export price saw a deep downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 an increase of 216%. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the maximum at $X per unit in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per unit), while Morocco ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Tunisia (+15.3%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in Africa

For the fourth year in a row, Africa recorded growth in supplies from abroad of industrial robots for multiple uses, which increased by 12% to X units in 2021. In general, imports posted resilient growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 158%. The volume of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, industrial robot imports dropped modestly to $X in 2021. Overall, imports enjoyed a moderate expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 89% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

Morocco represented the largest importer of industrial robots for multiple uses in Africa, with the volume of imports resulting at X units, which was approx. 74% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by South Africa (X units), generating a 10% share of total imports. Mozambique (X units), Nigeria (X units), Algeria (X units) and Egypt (X units) took a minor share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to industrial robot imports into Morocco stood at +6.8%. At the same time, Mozambique (+68.2%), Egypt (+23.8%), Algeria (+13.1%) and Nigeria (+2.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mozambique emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +68.2% from 2012-2021. South Africa experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. While the share of Mozambique (+3.9 p.p.) and Morocco (+2.6 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of South Africa (-9 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest industrial robot importing markets in Africa were Morocco ($X), South Africa ($X) and Algeria ($X), with a combined 90% share of total imports. Egypt, Nigeria and Mozambique lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 4%.

Among the main importing countries, Mozambique, with a CAGR of +50.0%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Africa stood at $X per unit in 2021, with a decrease of -12.4% against the previous year. Overall, the import price recorded a pronounced setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the import price increased by 52%. The level of import peaked at $X per unit in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per unit), while Mozambique ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+6.7%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
