Industrial Roundwood Market Size in Africa

The African industrial roundwood market shrank modestly to $X in 2022, therefore, remained relatively stable against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, industrial roundwood production fell modestly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production continues to indicate a slight decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the production volume increased by 22%. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2015 to 2022, production growth failed to regain momentum.

Exports in Africa

In 2022, approx. X cubic meters of industrial roundwood were exported in Africa; declining by -8.5% compared with the previous year. Total exports indicated a modest expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports decreased by -38.4% against 2018 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 24%. The volume of export peaked at X cubic meters in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, industrial roundwood exports contracted to $X in 2022. Total exports indicated a pronounced expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +15.2% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when exports increased by 36%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Cameroon (X cubic meters), Congo (X cubic meters), South Africa (X cubic meters), Equatorial Guinea (X cubic meters) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (X cubic meters) represented roughly 77% of total exports in 2022. Nigeria (X cubic meters), Sierra Leone (X cubic meters), Central African Republic (X cubic meters), Ghana (X cubic meters), Mali (X cubic meters) and Madagascar (X cubic meters) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Mali (with a CAGR of +59.1%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Congo ($X), Cameroon ($X) and Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, with a combined 55% share of total exports. Equatorial Guinea, Sierra Leone, South Africa, Central African Republic, Nigeria, Ghana, Mali and Madagascar lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 38%.

Mali, with a CAGR of +69.0%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per cubic meter, remaining relatively unchanged against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.0%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 an increase of 16% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per cubic meter in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Sierra Leone ($X per cubic meter), while South Africa ($X per cubic meter) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Central African Republic (+15.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Industrial Roundwood Imports

Imports in Africa

In 2022, supplies from abroad of industrial roundwood increased by 13% to X cubic meters, rising for the second consecutive year after five years of decline. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a abrupt downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 41%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X cubic meters. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, industrial roundwood imports shrank to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a perceptible shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 24%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Egypt (X cubic meters) represented the main importer of industrial roundwood, generating 46% of total imports. Algeria (X cubic meters) held a 19% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Ghana (7.2%) and Morocco (7.2%). Mozambique (X cubic meters), Botswana (X cubic meters), Mauritania (X cubic meters), Mauritius (X cubic meters), Tunisia (X cubic meters) and Lesotho (X cubic meters) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to industrial roundwood imports into Egypt stood at -9.8%. At the same time, Ghana (+26.7%), Algeria (+26.7%), Mozambique (+9.2%), Botswana (+3.6%) and Lesotho (+3.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Ghana emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +26.7% from 2012-2022. Mauritius experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Tunisia (-6.1%), Mauritania (-9.0%) and Morocco (-18.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Algeria (+18 p.p.), Ghana (+6.9 p.p.) and Mozambique (+2.3 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Egypt and Morocco saw its share reduced by -13.3% and -17.1% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Egypt ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported industrial roundwood in Africa, comprising 46% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Algeria ($X), with a 14% share of total imports. It was followed by Ghana, with a 7.8% share.

In Egypt, industrial roundwood imports decreased by an average annual rate of -3.4% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Algeria (+28.4% per year) and Ghana (+29.3% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Africa stood at $X per cubic meter in 2022, waning by -15.7% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, enjoyed a prominent expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 an increase of 63%. The level of import peaked at $X per cubic meter in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
