The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when exports increased by 25%. The volume of export peaked at X cubic meters in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, industrial roundwood (non-coniferous) exports shrank to $X in 2022. Total exports indicated modest growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, (non-coniferous) exports increased by +14.1% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when exports increased by 36% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Cameroon (X cubic meters) and Congo (X cubic meters) represented the key exporters of industrial roundwood in 2022, accounting for near 25% and 24% of total exports, respectively. Equatorial Guinea (X cubic meters) ranks next in terms of the total exports with a 12% share, followed by Democratic Republic of the Congo (9.8%). Nigeria (X cubic meters), Sierra Leone (X cubic meters), South Africa (X cubic meters), Central African Republic (X cubic meters), Ghana (X cubic meters) and Mali (X cubic meters) took a relatively small share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the key exporting countries, was attained by Mali (with a CAGR of +59.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest industrial roundwood (non-coniferous) supplying countries in Africa were Congo ($X), Cameroon ($X) and Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X), with a combined 58% share of total exports. Equatorial Guinea, Sierra Leone, Central African Republic, Nigeria, Ghana, Mali and South Africa lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 35%.

In terms of the main exporting countries, Mali, with a CAGR of +69.1%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The export price in Africa stood at $X per cubic meter in 2022, rising by 5.3% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.9%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 an increase of 17% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the maximum in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Sierra Leone ($X per cubic meter), while South Africa ($X per cubic meter) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Central African Republic (+15.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the amount of industrial roundwood imported in Africa declined markedly to X cubic meters, which is down by -40.3% against the year before. Over the period under review, imports recorded a drastic downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 77%. The volume of import peaked at X cubic meters in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, industrial roundwood (non-coniferous) imports declined notably to $X in 2022. In general, imports saw a mild curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 85%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of (non-coniferous) imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Egypt (X cubic meters), distantly followed by Algeria (X cubic meters), Morocco (X cubic meters), Mauritania (X cubic meters) and Mozambique (X cubic meters) were the major importers of industrial roundwood, together achieving 73% of total imports. The following importers - Tunisia (X cubic meters), Mauritius (X cubic meters), Madagascar (X cubic meters) and Ghana (X cubic meters) - each resulted at a 16% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Madagascar (with a CAGR of +39.3%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest industrial roundwood (non-coniferous) importing markets in Africa were Egypt ($X), Algeria ($X) and Mauritius ($X), with a combined 66% share of total imports. Ghana, Mozambique, Morocco, Tunisia, Mauritania and Madagascar lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 20%.

In terms of the main importing countries, Ghana, with a CAGR of +42.6%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The import price in Africa stood at $X per cubic meter in 2022, remaining constant against the previous year. Import price indicated perceptible growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, industrial roundwood (non-coniferous) import price decreased by -18.2% against 2017 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when the import price increased by 34%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per cubic meter. From 2018 to 2022, the import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
