Industrial Sewing Machine Market Size in Africa

In 2022, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in the African industrial sewing machine market, when its value increased by 13% to $X. The total consumption indicated prominent growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

From 2015 to 2022, production growth remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, the amount of industrial sewing machines exported in Africa dropped rapidly to X units, shrinking by -43.6% against 2021 figures. In general, exports, however, showed mild growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when exports increased by 294% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X units. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, industrial sewing machine exports fell significantly to $X in 2022. Overall, exports saw a perceptible slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 54% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

South Africa was the largest exporter of industrial sewing machines in Africa, with the volume of exports resulting at X units, which was near 73% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Mauritius (X units), achieving a 12% share of total exports. Madagascar (X units), Tunisia (X units), Egypt (X units) and Kenya (X units) held a minor share of total exports.

Exports from South Africa increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Madagascar (+34.4%), Kenya (+17.6%) and Egypt (+16.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Madagascar emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +34.4% from 2012-2022. Mauritius experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Tunisia (-8.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Madagascar (+4 p.p.), South Africa (+3.5 p.p.), Egypt (+1.7 p.p.) and Kenya (+1.6 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Mauritius (-2.6 p.p.) and Tunisia (-5.1 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest industrial sewing machine supplier in Africa, comprising 49% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Madagascar ($X), with a 12% share of total exports. It was followed by Tunisia, with a 9.7% share.

In South Africa, industrial sewing machine exports increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Madagascar (+11.4% per year) and Tunisia (-12.1% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per unit, jumping by 24% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, continues to indicate a perceptible contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when the export price increased by 204% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per unit in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Tunisia ($X per unit), while Egypt ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (-0.5%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

In 2022, supplies from abroad of industrial sewing machines decreased by -7.7% to X units, falling for the third consecutive year after two years of growth. Overall, imports, however, showed a buoyant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when imports increased by 58%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X units in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, industrial sewing machine imports stood at $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a prominent expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 23%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Nigeria was the largest importer of industrial sewing machines in Africa, with the volume of imports recording X units, which was approx. 29% of total imports in 2022. Egypt (X units) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Algeria (X units), Ghana (X units), South Africa (X units) and Ethiopia (X units). All these countries together took approx. 37% share of total imports. The following importers - Morocco (X units), Senegal (X units), Kenya (X units), Tunisia (X units), Djibouti (X units), Mozambique (X units) and Uganda (X units) - together made up 19% of total imports.

Nigeria was also the fastest-growing in terms of the industrial sewing machines imports, with a CAGR of +22.5% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Uganda (+17.1%), Mozambique (+14.9%), Ethiopia (+12.3%), Senegal (+9.9%), Ghana (+9.5%), Algeria (+9.0%), Djibouti (+7.4%), Morocco (+5.8%), Egypt (+5.1%) and Kenya (+4.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. South Africa experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Tunisia (-2.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Nigeria (+20 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Kenya (-1.6 p.p.), Morocco (-1.7 p.p.), Tunisia (-5.2 p.p.), Egypt (-6.1 p.p.) and South Africa (-8.5 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Nigeria ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported industrial sewing machines in Africa, comprising 37% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Morocco ($X), with a 9.4% share of total imports. It was followed by Ethiopia, with a 9.3% share.

In Nigeria, industrial sewing machine imports increased at an average annual rate of +19.6% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Morocco (+7.3% per year) and Ethiopia (+16.3% per year).

The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when the import price increased by 36%.
