In 2021, the African tall oil fatty acids market increased by 61% to $X, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. Overall, consumption saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.
Production of Industrial Tall Oil Fatty Acids in Africa
In value terms, tall oil fatty acids production reduced to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when the production volume increased by 24%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2020, and then declined in the following year.

In 2021, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas shipments of industrial tall oil fatty acids, when their volume decreased by -27.8% to X tons. In general, exports, however, saw a pronounced expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 65% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2020, and then fell rapidly in the following year.
In value terms, tall oil fatty acids exports declined to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, posted a slight increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when exports increased by 96% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2020, and then declined in the following year.
Exports by Country
Egypt prevails in exports structure, amounting to X tons, which was near 74% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Algeria (X tons), mixing up an 8.1% share of total exports. Zimbabwe (X tons), Mozambique (X tons), Kenya (X tons), South Africa (X tons) and Senegal (X tons) held a relatively small share of total exports.
Exports from Egypt increased at an average annual rate of +5.5% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Kenya (+25.4%) and Algeria (+1.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Kenya emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +25.4% from 2012-2021. Mozambique and Senegal experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, South Africa (-16.9%) and Zimbabwe (-26.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Egypt, Zimbabwe and Kenya increased by +9.7, +3.8 and +2.9 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Egypt ($X) remains the largest tall oil fatty acids supplier in Africa, comprising 76% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by South Africa ($X), with a 5.3% share of total exports. It was followed by Mozambique, with a 4.9% share.
In Egypt, tall oil fatty acids exports increased at an average annual rate of +4.9% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: South Africa (-15.6% per year) and Mozambique (+1.4% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, increasing by 31% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, showed a noticeable shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 44% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Zimbabwe ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Senegal (+19.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Imports of Industrial Tall Oil Fatty Acids
Imports in Africa
For the third year in a row, Africa recorded growth in overseas purchases of industrial tall oil fatty acids, which increased by 53% to X tons in 2021. In general, imports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, tall oil fatty acids imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a slight increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +106.1% against 2019 indices. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
In 2021, South Africa (X tons) represented the largest importer of industrial tall oil fatty acids, creating 40% of total imports. Gambia (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Malawi (X tons), Egypt (X tons) and Algeria (X tons). All these countries together took near 41% share of total imports. Mozambique (X tons) and Seychelles (X tons) held a minor share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by South Africa (with a CAGR of +23.5%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported industrial tall oil fatty acids in Africa, comprising 48% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Egypt ($X), with a 9.7% share of total imports. It was followed by Malawi, with a 7.6% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Africa stood at +22.6%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Egypt (+21.5% per year) and Malawi (-13.5% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, growing by 9.3% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.4%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 16%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2014; afterwards, it flattened through to 2021.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Seychelles ($X per ton), while Gambia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mozambique (+17.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
