Inedible Fish Products Market Size in Africa

The African inedible fish products market contracted modestly to $X in 2022, which is down by -4.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption, however, posted a pronounced expansion. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in overseas shipments of inedible fish products, when their volume increased by 350% to X tons. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a prominent expansion. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, inedible fish products exports surged to $X in 2022. Total exports indicated buoyant growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

Morocco was the key exporting country with an export of around X tons, which resulted at 80% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Mauritius (X tons), generating a 17% share of total exports. Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) held a relatively small share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to inedible fish products exports from Morocco stood at +14.1%. At the same time, Cote d'Ivoire (+32.0%) and Mauritius (+3.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Cote d'Ivoire emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +32.0% from 2012-2022. While the share of Morocco (+26 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Mauritius (-13.3 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest inedible fish products supplying countries in Africa were Morocco ($X), Mauritius ($X) and Cote d'Ivoire ($X), together comprising 95% of total exports.

Cote d'Ivoire, with a CAGR of +23.6%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, shrinking by -55.7% against the previous year. Overall, the export price showed a noticeable reduction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when the export price increased by 49% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2021, and then dropped significantly in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Mauritius ($X per ton), while Cote d'Ivoire ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mauritius (+2.9%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in Africa

In 2022, the amount of inedible fish products imported in Africa fell to X tons, reducing by -11.5% compared with the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, imports showed a abrupt downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 76% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, inedible fish products imports declined to $X in 2022. Overall, imports saw a abrupt decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 40%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Mauritius dominates imports structure, amounting to X tons, which was near 88% of total imports in 2022. The following importers - Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), Namibia (X tons) and Zimbabwe (X tons) - each accounted for a 6.3% share of total imports.

Mauritius experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of imports of inedible fish products. Zimbabwe experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. Namibia (-2.3%) and Cote d'Ivoire (-11.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Mauritius (+43 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Cote d'Ivoire (-1.5 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Mauritius ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported inedible fish products in Africa, comprising 76% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Cote d'Ivoire ($X), with an 8.4% share of total imports. It was followed by Namibia, with a 1.8% share.

In Mauritius, inedible fish products imports remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Cote d'Ivoire (-1.9% per year) and Namibia (+4.8% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, with an increase of 6.7% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.0%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when the import price increased by 55% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Cote d'Ivoire ($X per ton), while Zimbabwe ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
