In 2022, the African ink-pad market increased by 39% to $X for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Over the period under review, consumption, however, showed a abrupt setback. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, ink-pad production expanded modestly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, recorded a deep reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the production volume increased by 12%. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

Exports in Africa
In 2022, the amount of ink-pads exported in Africa dropped significantly to X units, shrinking by -68.4% compared with the year before. Overall, exports saw a sharp contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 104% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X units in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, ink-pad exports shrank dramatically to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports showed a sharp shrinkage. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 55%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
South Africa prevails in exports structure, reaching X units, which was near 90% of total exports in 2022. The following exporters - Rwanda (X units) and Botswana (X units) - together made up 6% of total exports.
Exports from South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of -22.6% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Botswana (+20.7%) and Rwanda (+2.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Botswana emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +20.7% from 2012-2022. Rwanda (+3.6 p.p.) and Botswana (+2.1 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while South Africa saw its share reduced by -9.1% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest ink-pad supplier in Africa, comprising 91% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Botswana ($X), with a 2.5% share of total exports.
In South Africa, ink-pad exports plunged by an average annual rate of -27.5% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Botswana (+24.2% per year) and Rwanda (-28.0% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Africa stood at $X per unit in 2022, rising by 10% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, saw a abrupt contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when the export price increased by 36% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per unit in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Botswana ($X per unit), while Rwanda (less than $X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Botswana (+2.9%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in Africa
In 2022, after three years of decline, there was significant growth in supplies from abroad of ink-pads, when their volume increased by 44% to X units. In general, imports, however, showed a pronounced contraction. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X units in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, ink-pad imports expanded remarkably to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, recorded a abrupt descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 10% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Morocco (X units), distantly followed by Swaziland (X units), Algeria (X units), Mozambique (X units), Botswana (X units), Tunisia (X units) and Ghana (X units) were the key importers of ink-pads, together comprising 69% of total imports. Lesotho (X units), Angola (X units), Rwanda (X units), Cote d'Ivoire (X units), Egypt (X units) and Madagascar (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to ink-pad imports into Morocco stood at +12.1%. At the same time, Botswana (+19.2%), Mozambique (+17.9%), Madagascar (+13.4%), Algeria (+12.4%), Tunisia (+5.1%) and Rwanda (+2.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Botswana emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +19.2% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Cote d'Ivoire (-1.5%), Swaziland (-3.5%), Angola (-5.2%), Egypt (-11.3%), Ghana (-14.2%) and Lesotho (-19.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Morocco (+19 p.p.), Mozambique (+7.7 p.p.), Algeria (+7 p.p.), Botswana (+5.8 p.p.) and Tunisia (+3 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Egypt (-2.5 p.p.), Ghana (-10.5 p.p.) and Lesotho (-22.8 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, the largest ink-pad importing markets in Africa were Botswana ($X), Tunisia ($X) and Morocco ($X), with a combined 40% share of total imports.
Botswana, with a CAGR of +27.7%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per unit, with a decrease of -23.7% against the previous year. Overall, the import price showed a abrupt shrinkage. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 20% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per unit. From 2018 to 2022, the import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Botswana ($X per unit), while Mozambique (less than $X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Ghana (+7.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
