Ink Market Size in Africa

The African ink market expanded markedly to $X in 2021, picking up by 11% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption, however, recorded a pronounced setback. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

Ink Production in Africa

In value terms, ink production dropped modestly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production recorded a pronounced decrease. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 40% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production reached the peak level at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Ink Exports

In 2021, overseas shipments of inks (excluding printing ink) increased by 7.5% to X tons, rising for the third consecutive year after four years of decline. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a perceptible decline. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when exports increased by 16%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, ink exports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a slight shrinkage. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 73% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

South Africa prevails in exports structure, resulting at X tons, which was near 90% of total exports in 2021. Egypt (X tons), Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) and Mauritius (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

South Africa experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of inks (excluding printing ink). At the same time, Mauritius (+3.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mauritius emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +3.0% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Cote d'Ivoire (-7.4%) and Egypt (-16.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of South Africa (+19 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Egypt (-10.6 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest ink supplier in Africa, comprising 91% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Mauritius ($X), with a 2.4% share of total exports. It was followed by Cote d'Ivoire, with a 2.2% share.

In South Africa, ink exports remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Mauritius (+2.2% per year) and Cote d'Ivoire (-5.4% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, increasing by 23% against the previous year. Export price indicated a mild expansion from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.8% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 49%. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Mauritius ($X per ton), while Egypt ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Egypt (+3.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

For the third consecutive year, Africa recorded growth in supplies from abroad of inks (excluding printing ink), which increased by 46% to X tons in 2021. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.9% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Nigeria (X tons) and South Africa (X tons) represented the key importers of inks (excluding printing ink) in Africa, together amounting to approx. 45% of total imports. Egypt (X tons) held a 5.8% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Kenya (5.8%) and Algeria (4.6%). Tunisia (X tons), Angola (X tons), Ethiopia (X tons), Djibouti (X tons), Ghana (X tons), Zimbabwe (X tons), Namibia (X tons) and Zambia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Djibouti (with a CAGR of +20.9%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest ink importing markets in Africa were South Africa ($X), Nigeria ($X) and Tunisia ($X), with a combined 42% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Angola, Kenya, Algeria, Egypt, Namibia, Ghana, Zimbabwe, Ethiopia, Zambia and Djibouti, which together accounted for a further 30%.

Angola, with a CAGR of +17.5%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, which is down by -2.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price showed a mild downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when the import price increased by 9.7% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Angola ($X per ton), while Djibouti ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Angola (+11.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
