Insecticide Market Size in Africa

After nine years of growth, the African insecticide market decreased by -3.2% to $X in 2021. The total consumption indicated resilient growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.7% over the last nine-year period. Insecticide Production in Africa

In value terms, insecticide production rose remarkably to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total production indicated a moderate increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.7% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production decreased by -4.6% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 81%. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2020 to 2021, production growth failed to regain momentum.

Exports in Africa

Insecticide exports surged to X tons in 2021, with an increase of 66% on 2020 figures. Total exports indicated a moderate expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.7% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, insecticide exports amounted to $X in 2021. Total exports indicated a pronounced increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.3% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +115.4% against 2015 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 53% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

In 2021, South Africa (X tons), distantly followed by Nigeria (X tons), Tanzania (X tons), Kenya (X tons) and Egypt (X tons) represented the major exporters of insecticides, together making up 90% of total exports. The following exporters - Zimbabwe (X tons) and Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) - each amounted to a 4% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main exporting countries, was attained by Tanzania (with a CAGR of +86.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest insecticide supplier in Africa, comprising 64% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Nigeria ($X), with a 9.3% share of total exports. It was followed by Kenya, with an 8% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa totaled +4.6%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Nigeria (+8.6% per year) and Kenya (+11.5% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, reducing by -36.1% against the previous year. Export price indicated a mild increase from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.5% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 45% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2020, and then dropped sharply in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Cote d'Ivoire ($X per ton), while Tanzania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Zimbabwe (+7.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Insecticide Imports

Imports in Africa

In 2021, the amount of insecticides imported in Africa declined to X tons, waning by -7.5% compared with the previous year's figure. Total imports indicated a resilient expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +7.2% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +57.9% against 2015 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 31% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons, and then contracted in the following year.

In value terms, insecticide imports rose slightly to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a buoyant expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.4% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +80.4% against 2015 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 21% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

Imports by Country

The purchases of the three major importers of insecticides, namely Nigeria, Ghana and Cote d'Ivoire, represented more than third of total import. South Africa (X tons) took a 6.2% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Morocco (5.7%) and Angola (5.5%). Ethiopia (X tons), Zimbabwe (X tons), Algeria (X tons), Tanzania (X tons), Mozambique (X tons), Togo (X tons) and Cameroon (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Mozambique (with a CAGR of +27.1%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, South Africa ($X), Ghana ($X) and Nigeria ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together comprising 32% of total imports. Morocco, Cote d'Ivoire, Ethiopia, Zimbabwe, Algeria, Angola, Cameroon, Mozambique, Tanzania and Togo lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 40%.

Mozambique, with a CAGR of +23.7%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, rising by 12% against the previous year. In general, the import price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2019; afterwards, it flattened through to 2021.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Togo ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
