In value terms, measuring instrument exports surged to $X in 2021. Total exports indicated a perceptible increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.5% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The level of export peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In 2021, Angola (X units) represented the major exporter of instruments and apparatus for measuring or checking the flow or level of liquids, generating 69% of total exports. South Africa (X units) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 14% share, followed by Congo (6.2%). Madagascar (X units), Morocco (X units) and Tunisia (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Angola was also the fastest-growing in terms of the instruments and apparatus for measuring or checking the flow or level of liquids exports, with a CAGR of +77.4% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Morocco (+30.5%), Congo (+18.8%) and Madagascar (+1.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. South Africa experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Tunisia (-4.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Angola (+68 p.p.), Congo (+2.1 p.p.) and Morocco (+1.8 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Madagascar, Tunisia and South Africa saw its share reduced by -4.6%, -6.7% and -28.8% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest measuring instrument supplier in Africa, comprising 69% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Angola ($X), with a 12% share of total exports. It was followed by Tunisia, with an 8.2% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa totaled +2.8%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Angola (+26.6% per year) and Tunisia (+11.5% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Africa stood at $X per unit in 2021, falling by -61.6% against the previous year. Overall, the export price saw a abrupt setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when the export price increased by 37% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per unit in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per unit), while Congo ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Tunisia (+16.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Africa

In 2021, supplies from abroad of instruments and apparatus for measuring or checking the flow or level of liquids increased by 51% to X units for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year declining trend. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.5% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, measuring instrument imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +1.5% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

Nigeria was the main importer of instruments and apparatus for measuring or checking the flow or level of liquids in Africa, with the volume of imports amounting to X units, which was near 28% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Angola (X units), South Africa (X units), Morocco (X units), Egypt (X units), Algeria (X units) and Ethiopia (X units), together making up a 42% share of total imports. Zimbabwe (X units), Cameroon (X units), Zambia (X units), Ghana (X units), Senegal (X units) and Tunisia (X units) took a little share of total imports.

Imports into Nigeria increased at an average annual rate of +15.3% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Senegal (+19.1%), Angola (+15.7%), Cameroon (+14.3%), Zimbabwe (+13.7%), Ethiopia (+10.3%), Algeria (+8.7%), Egypt (+7.3%), Morocco (+4.2%), Tunisia (+3.8%) and South Africa (+2.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Senegal emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +19.1% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Zambia (-6.1%) and Ghana (-9.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Nigeria (+15 p.p.), Angola (+6 p.p.), Zimbabwe (+2.1 p.p.) and Ethiopia (+1.5 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while South Africa, Zambia and Ghana saw its share reduced by -2.6%, -4.4% and -6.7% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest measuring instrument importing markets in Africa were South Africa ($X), Nigeria ($X) and Angola ($X), together comprising 50% of total imports. These countries were followed by Egypt, Algeria, Morocco, Tunisia, Ghana, Ethiopia, Senegal, Zambia, Cameroon and Zimbabwe, which together accounted for a further 28%.

In terms of the main importing countries, Senegal, with a CAGR of +18.8%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per unit, with a decrease of -17.7% against the previous year. Overall, the import price saw a perceptible curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the import price increased by 10%. The level of import peaked at $X per unit in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per unit), while Zimbabwe ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Zambia (+6.1%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
