Dental Instruments Market Size in Africa

In 2021, the African dental instruments market decreased by -1.6% to $X for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year rising trend. The total consumption indicated a resilient expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.1% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, consumption increased by +40.7% against 2017 indices. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2020, and then shrank modestly in the following year.

In value terms, dental instruments production reduced to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total production indicated a resilient increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.8% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production increased by +26.9% against 2017 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when the production volume increased by 37%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2020, and then shrank in the following year.

Exports in Africa

In 2021, shipments abroad of instruments for dental sciences increased by 16% to X units, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. Overall, exports, however, saw a abrupt descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 56% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X units in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, dental instruments exports declined to $X in 2021. In general, exports showed prominent growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 101% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X, and then reduced in the following year.

Exports by Country

Tunisia was the key exporter of instruments for dental sciences in Africa, with the volume of exports resulting at X units, which was near 71% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by South Africa (X units), mixing up a 15% share of total exports. Ghana (X units), Madagascar (X units) and Kenya (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Exports from Tunisia decreased at an average annual rate of -7.8% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Ghana (+57.5%), Kenya (+44.2%), South Africa (+24.9%) and Madagascar (+2.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Ghana emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +57.5% from 2012-2021. While the share of South Africa (+14 p.p.), Ghana (+2.5 p.p.) and Kenya (+2 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Tunisia (-16 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X), Tunisia ($X) and Ghana ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, with a combined 95% share of total exports.

Ghana, with a CAGR of +92.1%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per unit, dropping by -18.7% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, enjoyed a prominent expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 an increase of 232%. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure at $X per unit in 2020, and then fell markedly in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per unit), while Madagascar ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Ghana (+22.0%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Dental Instruments Imports

Imports in Africa

In 2021, the amount of instruments for dental sciences imported in Africa expanded rapidly to X units, picking up by 5.2% compared with the previous year. Total imports indicated a perceptible increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.4% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +68.3% against 2015 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 32% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

In value terms, dental instruments imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of import peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

Morocco represented the major importer of instruments for dental sciences in Africa, with the volume of imports resulting at X units, which was approx. 31% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Nigeria (X units), South Africa (X units), Libya (X units), Egypt (X units), Ethiopia (X units), Algeria (X units) and Tunisia (X units), together creating a 50% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to dental instruments imports into Morocco stood at +7.4%. At the same time, Ethiopia (+42.7%), Egypt (+15.6%), Tunisia (+13.4%), South Africa (+8.7%) and Nigeria (+5.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Ethiopia emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +42.7% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Algeria (-5.5%) and Libya (-6.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Morocco (+7 p.p.), Ethiopia (+5 p.p.), Egypt (+4 p.p.), South Africa (+3 p.p.) and Tunisia (+2.5 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Algeria and Libya saw its share reduced by -6.9% and -14% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest dental instruments importing markets in Africa were Morocco ($X), South Africa ($X) and Algeria ($X), together accounting for 53% of total imports. Egypt, Tunisia, Libya, Ethiopia and Nigeria lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 32%.

Among the main importing countries, Ethiopia, with a CAGR of +39.2%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per unit, rising by 24% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, continues to indicate a perceptible setback. The level of import peaked at $X per unit in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Algeria ($X per unit), while Nigeria ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
