In 2022, the African optical radiation instruments market decreased by -0.1% to $X for the first time since 2015, thus ending a six-year rising trend. Optical radiation instruments exports contracted to X units in 2022, falling by -14.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, exports recorded a pronounced decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 42% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X units in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, optical radiation instruments exports declined dramatically to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, recorded strong growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 47%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2021, and then declined markedly in the following year.

Exports by Country

South Africa represented the key exporter of instruments using optical radiations in Africa, with the volume of exports finishing at X units, which was near 60% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Tunisia (X units), generating a 13% share of total exports. Mozambique (X units), Rwanda (X units), Liberia (X units), Uganda (X units), Tanzania (X units), Angola (X units) and Kenya (X units) held a minor share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to optical radiation instruments exports from South Africa stood at -7.9%. At the same time, Liberia (+114.7%), Tunisia (+77.5%), Rwanda (+75.1%), Uganda (+46.3%), Mozambique (+44.5%), Tanzania (+41.7%), Angola (+25.1%) and Kenya (+3.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Liberia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +114.7% from 2012-2022. Tunisia (+13 p.p.), Mozambique (+4.2 p.p.), Rwanda (+3.8 p.p.), Liberia (+2.8 p.p.), Uganda (+2.7 p.p.), Tanzania (+1.8 p.p.) and Angola (+1.6 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while South Africa saw its share reduced by -32.2% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest optical radiation instruments supplier in Africa, comprising 75% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Tunisia ($X), with a 7.5% share of total exports. It was followed by Kenya, with a 3% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa stood at +3.7%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Tunisia (+66.0% per year) and Kenya (+17.2% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per unit, declining by -10.7% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, posted resilient growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when the export price increased by 64% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the maximum at $X per unit in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Kenya ($X per unit), while Liberia ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Kenya (+13.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Africa

In 2022, supplies from abroad of instruments using optical radiations decreased by -4.7% to X units for the first time since 2015, thus ending a six-year rising trend. Overall, imports, however, saw a remarkable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 53%. The volume of import peaked at X units in 2021, and then contracted in the following year.

In value terms, optical radiation instruments imports contracted to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, enjoyed a strong expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 42%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Algeria (X units), distantly followed by South Africa (X units), Libya (X units), Nigeria (X units), Morocco (X units) and Kenya (X units) were the major importers of instruments using optical radiations, together creating 56% of total imports. Tunisia (X units), Sudan (X units), Uganda (X units), Ghana (X units), Ethiopia (X units), Egypt (X units) and Tanzania (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Nigeria (with a CAGR of +49.3%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported instruments using optical radiations in Africa, comprising 20% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Algeria ($X), with a 10% share of total imports. It was followed by Libya, with a 6.4% share.

In South Africa, optical radiation instruments imports contracted by an average annual rate of -3.3% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Algeria (+10.7% per year) and Libya (+10.4% per year).

The import price in Africa stood at $X per unit in 2022, falling by -4.7% against the previous year. Overall, the import price showed a pronounced setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when the import price increased by 5.7%. There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per unit), while Tanzania ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
