The market value increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations in certain years. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2020, and then dropped slightly in the following year.
Interchangeable Tool Production in Africa
In value terms, interchangeable tool production contracted to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +1.8% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 26%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2020, and then dropped in the following year.

Exports in Africa
In 2021, the amount of interchangeable tools for hand tools exported in Africa soared to X tons, growing by 40% on 2020. In general, exports, however, recorded a slight downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 47%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, interchangeable tool exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a perceptible contraction. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
South Africa prevails in exports structure, recording X tons, which was near 73% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Morocco (X tons), constituting an 8.7% share of total exports. The following exporters - Senegal (X tons), Tanzania (X tons), Congo (X tons) and Tunisia (X tons) - together made up 9.8% of total exports.
South Africa experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of interchangeable tools for hand tools. At the same time, Senegal (+16.3%), Morocco (+15.7%) and Congo (+14.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Senegal emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +16.3% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Tanzania (-5.1%) and Tunisia (-5.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. South Africa (+8.4 p.p.), Morocco (+6.6 p.p.), Senegal (+2.8 p.p.) and Congo (+1.5 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest interchangeable tool supplier in Africa, comprising 80% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Morocco ($X), with a 6.9% share of total exports. It was followed by Tunisia, with a 2.2% share.
In South Africa, interchangeable tool exports contracted by an average annual rate of -3.1% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Morocco (+22.1% per year) and Tunisia (-12.1% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, growing by 5% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, continues to indicate a pronounced descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when the export price increased by 46% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Tunisia ($X per ton), while Senegal ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Morocco (+5.5%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in Africa
In 2021, supplies from abroad of interchangeable tools for hand tools was finally on the rise to reach X tons after three years of decline. Overall, imports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 18% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, interchangeable tool imports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a pronounced downturn. The level of import peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2021, South Africa (X tons) was the main importer of interchangeable tools for hand tools, making up 36% of total imports. Morocco (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Algeria (X tons). All these countries together held near 13% share of total imports. The following importers - Nigeria (X tons), Ghana (X tons), Tanzania (X tons), Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), Kenya (X tons), Burkina Faso (X tons), Senegal (X tons), Angola (X tons), Mali (X tons) and Zambia (X tons) - together made up 27% of total imports.
Imports into South Africa increased at an average annual rate of +6.1% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Burkina Faso (+13.4%), Senegal (+12.1%), Cote d'Ivoire (+5.9%), Kenya (+4.7%), Morocco (+4.7%), Tanzania (+4.5%) and Mali (+3.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Burkina Faso emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +13.4% from 2012-2021. Algeria experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Ghana (-2.7%), Zambia (-6.0%), Nigeria (-10.6%) and Angola (-12.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. South Africa (+14 p.p.), Morocco (+2.1 p.p.) and Burkina Faso (+1.7 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Zambia, Angola and Nigeria saw its share reduced by -1.5%, -5.7% and -7.2% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported interchangeable tools for hand tools in Africa, comprising 36% of total imports.
